The Office of Research and Development at theUniversity of Maryland Baltimore is currently seeking a Technology LicensingOfficer. The Technology Licensing Officer (TLO) functions as part of aninterdisciplinary team that assures the University protects, markets andcommercializes its technologies and discoveries. The incumbent drafts andnegotiates term sheets and contracts to ensure that University technology andintellectual property (IP) is appropriately commercialized and leadsnegotiations on IP licenses, option agreements and inter-institutionalagreements. The TLO serves as the University's primary point-of-contact withprospective and current licensees.

Actsas a liaison with University inventors, helping assess commercial potential ofnew invention disclosures, and identifying potential commercial partners.Facilitates interaction between licensees and University faculty by ensuringthat faculty are notified of and prepared for the obligations they and theUniversity assume when contracts are executed.
Developsterm sheets and negotiates contract terms, to include business and financialconsiderations, with sensitivity to maximizing the likelihood ofcommercialization while minimizing legal liability of the University andmeeting all State and Federal Regulations and guidelines governing theUniversity.
Actsas liaison between Technology Commercialization Team and the University'sOffice of General Counsel.
Coordinateswith other members of the Technology Commercialization Team to ensure timelyreporting (within the University and by State and Federal organizations) ofinformation to and from licensees of University IP. Notifies licensees of theirobligations and negotiates resolution when necessary for non-compliance and/orcontractual defaults.
Helpsidentify and facilitate new University start-up company activity.
Performsother related duties as assigned.
Education:Master's in a related field.
Experience:Three years progressively building experience in a corporate or technologytransfer environment.
Preferred Experience:Previous industry experience in Research and Development, Licensing, BusinessDevelopment or as a Scientific Liaison preferred.

Credit history review may be required.
Strong knowledge of medical related science and technology with solid understating of business and legal aspects of technology licensing.
Knowledge of key practices in field as well as established statutes, regulations, directives, and procedures.
Knowledge of contracts and licenses to include an understanding of legal consequences.
Skill in acting as a liaison with internal and external clients to ensure cooperation among parties needed to meet contractual obligations.
Ability to prioritize, plan, and execute multiple tasks needed to maintain contract compliance.
Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of basic word processing, spreadsheet and database packages.
Knowledge of best practices in technology commercialization.
Ability to achieve business objectives in an academic environment.
Ability to apply deductive reasoning and draw conclusions in order to solve problems and facilitate decision-making processes.
Skill in effective negotiation such that maximum benefit is derived from efforts.
Skill as a lead employee to mentor and guide subordinate staff.
