Advertised Summary Job Description: The Chief of Staff and Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives is a senior officer of SIPA and works closely with the Dean to provide leadership and management for School-wide projects and priorities, including in areas such as communications, external and alumni relations, admissions and financial aid, career services, and student affairs.
S/he strategizes with the Dean and other senior officers on institutional planning, policy and program development, and problem resolution, and ensures that implementation plans are effectively developed, communicated, managed and executed. Areas of special emphasis include executive education (in close collaboration with the Executive Director of the Picker Center for Executive Education) and the development and coordination of School-wide initiatives. Relevant areas of responsibility include the following:
Directs the Office of the Dean's strategic communications. Assists in drafting high level communications and facilitates resolution of matters requiring the Dean's attention, which could mean presentations and responses on institutional and strategic issues, including communications between the Dean and other senior officers of the University and the SIPA advisory board.
Supervises the following officers of administration, in close coordination with the Dean: Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Communications and External Relations, Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, and the Executive Director of Career Services. Supervises the Executive Assistant for the Office of the Senior Associate Dean.
Coordinates with the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration as needed on School-wide issues.
Coordinates the efforts of the faculty directors on administrative and operational issues for the Program in Economic Policy Management, the Program in Environmental Science and Policy, the Picker Center for Executive Education, the Sustainable Development PhD program, and the Master of Development Practice.
Coordinates with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as needed on matters pertaining to academic programs and faculty in close collaboration with the Dean, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and other relevant senior faculty.
Serves as SIPA's key liaison with the President's Office and the Provost's Office on all issues except faculty appointments, which are managed by the Vice Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Serves as a key administrative liaison to Columbia institutes and centers affiliated with SIPA, particularly the regional institutes, the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy, and the Earth Institute, as well as SIPA's own Centers and Institutes, including the Center for Global Energy Policy, the Center on Global Economic Governance, the Raj Center on Indian Economic Policy, the Center for Development Economics and Policy, and the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, among others.
Performs related duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and an advanced degree required. Must have a minimum of 10 years of related experience, including strategic planning and staff management.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated management experience in complex academic organizations in promoting and implementing new initiatives, improving quality outcomes and fostering multi-office collaboration and a positive work environment;
Demonstrated experience providing management support to a high level executive, including overseeing commitments and ensuring priorities in an intense dynamic environment;
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate and direct multiple projects and activities with varied deadlines, utilize sound judgement, be a strategic thinker and effective in moving strategic agendas, and be both savvy and ensure utmost discretion in all matters;
Team building skills, with ability to develop and supervise staff; ability to set priorities and work well with all levels of personnel;
Strong written and oral communication skills with the proven ability to problem solve and effectively operate with experience exercising effective judgement in a senior level administrative role within a dynamic environment.
Strong writing skills essential.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD or professional degree such as an MBA or MPA strongly preferred. Experience in or knowledge of the nature and operation of research universities highly desired.
