The position of president of Medical Foundation of North Carolina (MFNC) and associate dean for advancement is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic, creative and collaborative development professional to play a significant role in the ongoing success of one of the nation’s premier hospital systems and medical school. The position is an exempt, non-faculty position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a dual report to the 27-member MFNC board of directors and to the dean of the School of Medicine. The board elects the president of the foundation with approval of the dean of the School of Medicine. In conjunction with MFNC board members, the president will assist in further developing a culture of philanthropy within the community of grateful patients and families, donors, staff members, friends, alumni of the medical school, and convey to them the critical role private support has to the growth and sustainability of SOM and UNC Hospitals.
Education and Experience:
A seasoned development professional with at least eight years of leadership in a complex organization (preferably in higher education with an emphasis on academic medicine and/or clinical and basic research) who is capable of clearly articulating the case for support to donors and prospects alike, as well as, to colleagues across the larger UNC community (the university, UNC Health Care and SOM). A strategic and creative thinker, a persuasive communicator, and an excellent team player who is eager to work collaboratively with the foundation’s leadership; the Dean and academic leaders in SOM; the president and senior administrators at UNC Hospitals; and colleagues at UNC. A keen appreciation for the critical role UNC Health Care plays in providing essential healthcare to all citizens of North Carolina, particularly the underserved population; the impact SOM has on educating and training a significant number of medical professionals who work in the state; and a desire to play a meaningful role in the institution’s vision and to share in the community’s enthusiasm for UNC Health Care and SOM. The ability to build bridges and highly collaborative relationships with all members of a complex academic and medical community and a diverse group of grateful patients and alumni. Depth and breadth of knowledge of best practices in institutional advancement and success in leading and increasing the effectiveness of a major gift program through established objectives and performance standards that bring out the best in fundraising staff. Knowledge for how an independent funding foundation organized as an independent, charitable, not-for-profit organization should operate, the role and the fiduciary and governance responsibilities of a foundation’s governing board. Significant experience with developing and operationalizing financial models for development organizations. Superior communication skills with the intellectual depth necessary to understand and translate medical, technical, and research information for all audiences; clarity, crispness and effectiveness in written and oral presentation. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the credibility, maturity and sound judgment required to effectively engage senior leaders, deans, faculty, physicians, researchers and key volunteers in the fundraising process. Proven experience working with university and medical center leadership, board members and high-level volunteers. Proven ability to manage effectively during times of growth and change. An individual of great integrity and ethics. Success in increasing the effectiveness of a fundraising unit through established objectives and performance standards to bring out the best in the fundraising staff.
