Primary Duties: Under general direction of the President the Director of Tribal Relations on behalf of the President, serves as the liaison between the university and the tribal communities, with a focus on the CSU, Chico service region. The director represents CSU, Chico leadership, its academic programs, and resources in order to enhance, develop and create progressive and enriched relationships between CSU, Chico and tribal communities.
In collaboration with federally recognized tribal governments, tribal groups and affiliated organizations, the Director will be responsible for creating a vision for the advancement and the success of Native American students attending CSU, Chico. Incumbent also will be responsible for developing a 5- and 10-year plan for enhancement of our programs and policies, as well as, oversee the planning and development of educationally-focused relationships, providing expertise for university and tribal issues while providing guidance and assistance to the President and other university administrators. The Director will work toward the inclusion of Native American issues on campus ensuring representation at conversations and actions related to the diversity issues of the University. This position also will work closely with the faculty and staff in order to better support Native American students attending CSU, Chico.
This position represents the campus at events throughout local tribal communities including attendance at education-related meetings. The incumbent also represents the university at regional, statewide, and national Indian education events.
Requires a Bachelors degree in a job-related field.
Five years of full-time progressively responsible experience in student service and program management in an educational environment.
The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position is a Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) designated managerial position and comes under the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. Individuals appointed to management positions serve at the pleasure of the President or designee. They are excluded from the collective bargaining process, are not subject to probationary service, and do not receive tenure or permanent status. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a designated position under the California State Universitys Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
Position requires frequent evening and weekend time commitments and travel for conferences, training and recruitment.
Throughout employment in this position incumbent must maintain a valid California Drivers License as well continued completion and compliance of the CSU Defensive Drivers Training course.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. This is considered a sensitive position. As a result, current CSU, Chico employees are subject to a background check (including a criminal record check) unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSU, Chico within the past 12 months. PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS: Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position operating a personal computer for long periods of time and frequently moving about inside the office. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.
WORKENVIRONMENT: This position involves frequent to constant interaction with students, faculty, parents, guests, and staff. The office is a typical office environment with standard office equipment. At times, the individual may have evening and weekend work. Travel to local tribal communities, community colleges, regional and national conferences is required.
