Position The Associate Provost for Academic Research reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for the leadership and management of the research enterprise. In collaboration with internal and external constituencies, the successful candidate will oversee the promotion and facilitation of the research, scholarship, and creative activities across campus. Direct reports include the Director of Sponsored Programs, the Research Compliance Officer, and the Director of Student Research.
As a member of the Provost's leadership team, the successful candidate will be knowledgeable about all aspects of the campus. He/she will support a culture of student faculty research opportunities, make recommendations on all matters pertaining to research and external support, and provide direction in developing University research policies and practices. The Associate Provost for Academic Research will serve as a member the CSU Council of Chief Research Officers and CSUSB's Provost's Cabinet and Council of Dean. He/she will also participate in shared governances and provide general support to the Provost.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage the Office of Academic Research's activities, budget, operation and personnel
Oversee and support the Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs (pre-award) in developing and submitting grants
Oversee and support Sponsored Programs Administration (post-award) in administering and managing external grants and contracts
Act as the authorized organization representative with signature authority for all grants, contracts and agreements relating to external grants
Represent CSUSB to external and internal constituencies on matters related to research, grants, fellowships and contracts
Oversee all research compliance activities
Oversee and manage the research Conflict of Interest process and serve as the campus Research Integrity Officer, overseeing research misconduct issues and reports
Administer internal faculty professional development grants and workshops related to research
Oversee and support the Office of Student Research
Oversee campus Centers and Institute processes in collaboration with the Faculty Senate
Oversee several Centers and Institutes as reporting person
Oversee technology transfer processes
Serve as co-director of the Faculty Center for Excellence
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Tenured faculty with terminal degree
Ability to create a vision of the research enterprise with broad internal and external constituencies and provide leadership in pursuing this vision
Distinguished record of scholarly achievement
Demonstrated experience in research, including grant development and management and promoting interdisciplinary scholarship and training
Broad knowledge of funding sources and the ability to enhance and increase faculty participation in research opportunities
Strong commitment to research and leadership in fostering academic excellence in a research university
Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage office personnel successfully
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to shared governance that is inclusive of faculty in decision-making
Working knowledge of a wide range of discipline, an understanding of the academic interests and constituencies at CSUSB, and a strong commitment to diversity
