Employment Status: Full-time, "exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday from 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Position: Under the supervision of the Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Graduate Studies provides leadership and management of all post-baccalaureate, credential and graduate programs at CSUSB. The Dean of Graduate Studies provides academic, administrative, and strategic direction for the unit, is responsible for enhancing graduate and postdoctoral education at the University, including the development and implementation of a strategic plan; and oversees all policies and procedures related to graduate education and graduate students.
As a member of the Provost's leadership team, the successful candidate will be knowledge-able about all aspects of the campus. In coordination with other senior members, the Dean of Graduate Studies will participate in campus governance and serve on the Provost's Cabinet and Dean's Council, and as chair of the Strategic Analysis Steering Committee.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage the Office of Graduate Studies' activities, budget, operation, and personnel
Partner with the colleges, departments, and programs to monitor and develop new or existing graduate programs, including suspension and discontinuance of programs when appropriate
Oversee the Graduate Admissions Unit in alignment with the institutional enrollment management plan, campus and CSU system policies and procedures
Administer the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, including serving as the graduate coordinator for the program
Collaborate with academic leaders across campus to support graduate program activities, allocate and manage graduate funding, and ensure standards of excellence, fairness, and equity across all graduate programs
Oversee probation, dismissal, graduate fellowships, graduate theses, projects and dissertations, and administer funding opportunities for graduate students (Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program, California Pre-doctoral Program, etc.)
Approve graduate student commencement, waivers of regulations, leaves of absences, and other graduate student policies in alignment with University policies and procedures
Support faculty, staff, and students to maximize operational efficiency in the university
Implement strategies identified in the Strategic Analysis and Evaluation of Graduate Programs and develop a Strategic Plan
Establish outcomes for all graduate degree programs by identifying areas of mastery that are common to graduate programs and reflect CSUSB statements on graduate education in collaboration with the Graduate Council, the various colleges and the Faculty Senate
Address graduate student concerns and serve as mediator between students, faculty, staff, and college administrators
Oversee events, workshops, and an annual orientation for graduate students
Assist faculty with issues pertaining to graduate education and graduate students
Provides general support for the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Required Qualifications and Experience
Tenured faculty with terminal degree
Demonstrated leadership and management abilities
Distinguished record of scholarly achievement
Broad knowledge of graduate programs
Ability to create and implement a vision for graduate programs
Experience working with and mentoring a diverse graduate student body
Demonstrated commitment to shared governance that is inclusive of faculty in decision-making
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
