Virginia Tech is recruiting a robust and diverse cluster of faculty interested in contributing to transdisciplinary research, teaching, and/or outreach initiatives that align with our Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities (IIHCC) Destination Area. With commitments in this area from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, College of Engineering, and College of Science, the university is specifically seeking faculty interested in engaging with research and curricular initiatives that support creativity and problem solving in areas such as smart design & construction, energy, robotics & autonomous vehicle systems, ubiquitous mobility, and materials for a resilient & sustainable infrastructure. Faculty with expertise in disciplinary areas such as Architecture and Smart Technologies, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Regulatory Economics, Infrastructure Sensing and Health Monitoring, Energy Generation and Storage, Autonomous Systems, Robotics, Data-Driven Modeling, Human-Centered Interactive Simulation, or with interdisciplinary backgrounds will be uniquely positioned to help the university advance these efforts.

The IIHCC Area is focused on bringing visionary humanists & technologists together to create the framework for infrastructure innovation and the reinvention of community. Faculty working together in this area are committed to transdisciplinary solutions that exist along the interdependencies between humans, community, & infrastructure with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life around the globe. Work in this area also embraces equity in the human condition by seeking the equitable distribution and availability of physical safety & well-being, psychological well-being, respect for human dignity, & access to crucial material & social resources throughout the world's diverse communities. This area further incorporates the Materials Area's mission to innovate the future of manufacturing from atoms to systems through integrated discovery of materials, processes, & technologies while serving society through novel and resilient products & jobs creation, with transdisciplinary approaches to addressing critical scientific materials challenges in the research areas of health, energy, environment, & resilient infrastructure. Successful candidates will engage in IIHCC initiatives with other faculty across the university working in this area. As part of the cluster, they will also have opportunities to support curricular advances, advance interdisciplinary research efforts, & cultivate global outreach initiatives in related areas. Successful candidates will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, depending upon the needs of the hiring department.
An earned terminal degree is required at the time of appointment, in a field relevant to the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area (Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., MFA, etc. as appropriate to the discipline)
Assistant Professor level candidates must show potential for significant scholarship and teaching ability, while Associate Professor or Professor level candidates must demonstrate significant scholarship and teaching ability
