Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Provost/Dean of Students, and general direction of the elected officers of the Student Union Assembly (SUA), the SUA Adviser will provide day to day advising and mentoring to the Student Union Assembly, as well as support for daily SUA office fiscal and administrative operations. Utilizing the SUA Constitution and By-Laws, University Policy, and state and federal regulations, the SUA Adviser will be responsible for ensuring compliance and accuracy within daily operations. The Adviser serves as the staff liaison for the SUA to the campus community, and acts as an Ambassador on behalf of SUA. The adviser will support student leaders in the area of event planning, university policy, travel, payroll and fiscal operations. This position requires the ability to work with insight, tact and diplomacy when interacting with constituents within the SUA, Dean of Students Office, UCSC and external communities. The incumbent works independently with a high degree of confidentiality, and is responsible for providing event planning, administration and project support to the Student Union Assembly.
The Student Union Assembly (SUA) is the official undergraduate student government at UC Santa Cruz. The organization represents over 16,000 undergraduate students on the administrative, local, state, and federal level. Founded in 1985 to establish the Banana Slug as our official mascot, the SUA has been dedicated to over three decades of public service to the student body.
The Student Union Assembly is also the official voice of undergraduate students on campus-wide and system-wide committees. The SUA promotes activism, civic participation, discussion, debate, and awareness of public issues from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints. The SUA hosts campus-wide events, rallies, conferences, and educational forums that trains students in direct action organizing, representation, and student advocacy.
Bachelor's Degree in sociology, psychology, legal studies or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
Demonstrated experience working with college aged population as adviser, mentor and supervisor, including student governments and student organizations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a variety of individuals at various levels.
Experience exercising tact and diplomacy, sensitivity and helpfulness when interacting with people from diverse cultural or socio-economic backgrounds.
Ability to analyze complex information, problems, and processes in an objective manner and formulate conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, select appropriate courses of action and make recommendations.
