Budget Title: Director of Academic Advisement (SL-5)
Salary: $85,000 - $100,000
The Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University seeks a dynamic leader to serve as the Director of the Harpur College Academic Advising Office. The liberal arts face critical challenges in the 21st century. We are looking for someone who will maintain the current strengths of Harpur Advising while exploring ways to improve and innovate. We seek someone with a broad knowledge of advising models and transformations in higher education nationally. The Director of the Harpur College Academic Advising Office is responsible for providing vision and leadership to 20 advisors and staff, including general advising for liberal arts students as well as pre-health and pre-law. The position reports to the Harpur College Dean's Office and is expected to provide input and direction on shaping policy for Harpur College.
The Director is responsible for the following functions:
Manage the Harpur College Academic Advising Office
Ensure Harpur College students receive consistent, accurate, and detailed advising in coordination with Harpur College departments and programs
Ensure advisors have the training to help liberal arts and sciences students explore majors, navigate policies and procedures, and provide information on the many resources available to students in order to complement their coursework
Develop relationships with Harpur College academic departments working within Harpur College's dual advising structure
Oversee financial aid reviews for degree applicability
Explore technology that can help enhance the student advising experience
Work collaboratively with student services departments
Provide programming to help enhance persistence and graduation rates
Consider ways to promote combined degree programs to undergraduate students
Share knowledge of curriculum and policy changes that impact students via web and communication stream
Ensure staffing at events such as orientation and admissions events
Serve as a resource for faculty advisors
The Director is involved in college and university committees related to undergraduate education, including monthly meetings with the Harpur College Dean's Office, Academic Affairs Council, Undergraduate Directors, and other ad hoc committees as appropriate.
Master's degree or higher plus 5 years of higher education advising experience
A minimum of three years supervisory experience in a higher education setting
A minimum of three years experience in academic advising
Ability to articulate a vision for academic advising for arts and science majors in the 21st century
Technical skills and abilities
Experience with Banner or other student records system
Knowledge of transfer credit evaluation system
