Reporting to the Vice President of Security, the Security Advisor integrates through the Security command structure across JHU and JHM to provide leadership, guidance and functional support of field operations across the institution. This position provides strong operational leadership to ensure that a security-focused culture is developed and maintained across the JHU and JHM footprint. Through delegated authority of the Vice President, the Security Advisor focuses on open inspections of all aspects of security operations, preparation and planning related to rapid redeployments, special event planning and enhancement of current security infrastructure.
This position collaborates with members of the Security team, leadership, managers, staff, students and faculty across the institution to conduct internal investigations, and work to prevent or respond to losses or other incidents. The Special Advisor keeps the Vice President of Security apprised of any concerns and issues regarding JHU and JHM Security and provides on-site security leadership in the absence of the Vice President. This role serves in an on-call capacity during non-business hours, to ensure that a stable security presence is reinforced across the institution.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Works through JHU and JHM Security command structure to support the development of a Security culture among the employees, faculty and contractors of the institution and keep all relevant parties informed of security conditions and trends that may be of concern.
Collaborates with members of the Security team to provide direction and oversight toward the management of campus field operations in the implementation of an effective security strategy to control crime issues that can impact the University and JHM community.
Works through JHU and JHM Security command structure to assist with security planning and resource deployment for university events, to include high profile government officials, Dean-sponsored Events, Commencement/Graduation activities and all other special event programming.
Works with members of the JHU and JHM Security teams to ensure that staffing and supply needs for special events are appropriate. Ensure that appropriate training and education is delivered to maximize security preparedness for all special events and threat situations.
Investigates threats to leadership, staff, faculty and assets, then partners with appropriate decision makers to develop strategies to mitigate risk.
Works with institutional leadership and security team members to strategically and pro-actively identify significant security risks and prioritize them based on the probability of occurrence. Based on related threat assessments, designs and recommends strategies to mitigate potential risks by implementing cost-based efficient security measures and post investigative risk analysis.
Collaborates with members of the Security, leadership and institutional management teams to provide assistance with formulating policies, assess security program needs and support the overall mission of the institution.
Coordinates with members of the Security and Administrative management teams to ensure that operational procedures for all security activities are appropriate and clearly understood by all related parties.
Works through designated internal command structure to ensure that any infractions of rules/regulations by assigned personnel are investigated and that appropriate action is taken.
Ensures that all matters of safety and security remain in compliance with the Clery Act and Title IX.
Works with the VP of Security to establish appropriate connections with local law enforcement agencies and external security committees/partnerships within the region.
Performs all related duties as requested.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
A minimum of 10 years of experience in corporate security management or 10 years of experience in law enforcement is required, with at least 3 years of law enforcement command experience
Demonstrated investigative experience and sound judgement is required.
Must be able to work a variety of shifts as required.
Demonstrated experience building consensus, working with teams, emotional intelligence, adaptability and working independently within a fast-paced, changing environment, with multiple stakeholders
Knowledge of security-related regulations is strongly preferred
Ability to develop, implement and administer policy directives relevant to the security program.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Ability to manage challenging situations. Proven ability to think and make appropriate decisions/judgments on his/her own. Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies, ad-hoc situations and work under pressure. Must have strong verbal and written skills, and good interpersonal skills. Excellent public relations and diplomatic skills are required. Must attend and speak at community meetings or other forums, at the request of the VP of Security. Must be computer literate and proven knowledgeable in Microsoft Office applications/programs. Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize work. Ability to address, deescalate and resolve conflicts.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
