The Executive Director supporting San Francisco Towers in San Francisco, CA shall have responsibility for the planning, staffing, controlling and actuating of the operations and management of the assigned community within guidelines established by the Chief Operating Officer, and in accordance with policies prescribed by the Board of Directors and applicable regulations and laws.
Formulation of community-based plans and objectives, plans and programs for the development of departments and services in the community, and works with the Chief Operating Officer and other members of Covia’s executive staff to integrate community endeavors into overall corporate objectives, plans and programs.
Assuring that each department in the community maintains an effective plan of organization suitable to the objectives of that department, and authorizes major additions, elimination or alterations of these plans.
Recommending to the Chief Operating Officer specific proposals for entry into or departure from specific services in the community.
Share in the development, leadership, and successful implementation of strategic plans that may include capital investment, business model innovation, systems and technology infrastructure, staffing models, the employee experience, and the resident experience.
Providing optimal utilization of the community staff by insuring that the community’s management team is staffed with competent personnel; that these persons are delegated appropriate authority and responsibility to perform their jobs; that feedback and accountability for performance is timely and effective; and that necessary reservations of authority are defined and understood.
Responsible for staffing levels authorized by their community’s approved budget (or subsequent direction from the Chief Operating Officer), for insuring that staffing and salary and wage structures are developed, maintained and properly controlled.
Responsible for providing a workplace atmosphere in which a high degree of employee engagement can be maintained, and for such other general staffing responsibilities common to all community executive directors as are not specified above.
Insuring that authorized plans and programs of the community are properly executed and that both the Executive Director and the Chief Operating Officer are kept informed as to the overall conditions and trends affecting the community.
Evaluating the need for and effectiveness of existing or proposed community policies; authorizes changes in community policy within established guidelines, and recommends to the Chief Operating Officer appropriate action for establishment of corporate policy.
Insuring that authorized budgeted revenue and expense goals are met within the community and will establish local policies and basic procedures governing the community’s budget with effective financial controls.
Maintaining and safeguarding the property and funds of the community in accordance with accepted practice and the procedures established, and for such other general controlling responsibilities common to all community executive directors as are not specified above.
Executing contracts and commitments on behalf of the community and will recommend appropriate actions on such matters requiring a corporate officer signature.
Approving operating and capital expenditures and will recommend appropriate action on amounts requiring corporate review and approval.
Responsible for resident occupancy in all sections of the community.
Maintaining a close liaison with community residents, keeping informed at all times of their needs, desires, critiques and suggestions.
Cooperating with all municipal, county, state and national departments, bureaus and commissions which maintain or exercise regulatory authority over the licenses, permits, services, safety or other operating conditions of a retirement residence as well as with professional organizations which have an interest in the medical, nursing, social service, educational and recreational aspects of the program.
Encourage residents to consider gifts and bequest to their community via the Covia Foundation in keeping with the Foundation’s status as a not-for-profit charitable corporation dedicated to “security and the full life” for all residents, even if they outlive their assets.
Represent the community in communication with the community and with regulatory authorities, and is responsible for actuating such other general responsibilities common to all community executive directors as are not specified above.
At all times, the Executive Director is expected to have conduct in action, language, and demeanor that reflects well upon Covia and the community, and is consistent with Covia’s guiding principles.
The community Executive Director is accountable to the Chief Operating Officer for proper interpretation and fulfillment of their functions, responsibilities and authority.

Ability to successfully manage and coordinate multiple projects and priorities, and to accomplish them through collaborative efforts with staff, peers.
Ability to consistently make reasoned and responsible decisions.
Ability to lead a complex community of individuals in such a way as to foster a high regard for the quality of life within that community and a confidence in the direction the community is going.
Ability to embrace and champion at the community level system changes aimed at improving organizational effectiveness, including technology and protocols.
Master’s Degree, preferably in a related field such as Gerontology, Health/Public Administration, Business, or other related field; or equivalent education and experience.
Six or more years’ experience as a senior manager in an aging services, senior living, or nonprofit organization.
Two or more years’ experience in a senior leadership role.
Valid Nursing Home Administrator license in California (or reciprocal-eligible state) and valid California Residential Care Facility for the Elderly Administrator Certificate.
