Morgan Stanley's Prime Brokerage business provides sophisticated global products and services to performance-oriented money managers who run some of the largest and most successful hedge funds. Morgan Stanley acts as a Prime Broker for hedge funds to consolidate, finance, clear and report daily trade activity across multiple products. MS PB is the global leader in terms of market share, and a significant proportion of the business is made up of European and Asian clients who are serviced by the International Prime Brokerage division (IPB).
The Role of the Prime Broker:
Prime brokers have historically supported the hedge fund industry in a number of ways, namely:
Offering cash financing, securities lending and custodial services.
Assisting with the hedge fund's capital raising activities.
Clearing and settlement of trades executed with the prime broker's own broker-dealer or other executing brokers
Via technology which is available to support the hedge fund throughout the entire investment cycle – research, execution, risk management, settlement and clearance and advice on "best of breed" third party solutions.
Specialist Client Service group to assist in day to day management of the fund.
As the demands of hedge funds have evolved, so too have services provided by the prime broker. Today, Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage supports clients across a wide range of trading strategies from the more traditional equity long/short to credit strategies and multi-strategy with managers trading equity, credit default swaps, index futures and global distressed debt.
