The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently recruiting for the position of Director for Industry Alliances . Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Industry Alliances, the Director will assist in the cultivation and oversight of initiatives to strengthen and grow UMB's research collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, federal agencies and non-government organizations.
The Director will have a solid scientific and business development background to be effective at promoting UMB's areas of expertise (including vaccine development, immunology research, oncology, microbiome, regenerative medicine, and clinical trials). Concurrently, the Director will have project management expertise and possess excellent communication skills needed to drive industry collaborations, strategic partnerships and to further advance the visibility of UMB's basic and translational research enterprise among industry partners.

Works alongside the AVP of Industry Alliances to expand and strengthen UMB's research collaborations and strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotech companies and federal agencies.
Uses business development efforts to promote the scientific values of UMB at meetings, conferences and trade shows to potential clients and stakeholders. Facilitates incoming inquiries, builds new relationships and acts as a catalyst to creating novel research initiatives and opportunities at UMB.
Engages UMB faculty who already have existing corporate sponsor relationships to be able to explore and expand into related or new research areas and broaden business opportunities for UMB and Baltimore.
Implements plan to reach forecasted business development goals and oversee systems to track growth and milestones for Industry Alliances.
Oversees the administrative aspects of securing new business (response to inquiries, preparation of proposals, follow up subsequent to events/meetings, etc.).
Conducts research to support and improve business development efforts using outreach/marketing tools, databases, financial forecasts, etc. Informs the process for strategic decision-making in collaboration with the AVP.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Master's degree in a related field, such as biomedical field or biotechnology. PhD preferred.
Experience: Seven (7) years of mid-level management experience in working with biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients and developing long-term business relationships. Supervisory: Three (3) years in a mid-level management role.
Certification : Program management professional (PMP) certification is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proven success in business development targeting a sophisticated audience including pharmaceutical and biotech company scientists and corporate level executives.
Possesses scientific, manufacturing and project management experience from pre-clinical drug development clinical trials and solid understanding of regulatory compliance to GCP/GMP/GLP/ISO standards and regulations.
Direct experience with development of biologics including monoclonal antibodies, therapeutics and vaccines. Thorough understanding of current disruptive technologies including gene and cell therapies (immuno-oncology, CAR T-cell therapy, regenerative medicine, etc.).
Exceptional interpersonal skills, reliable judgement and trusted discretion to relate to numerous and varied constituencies.
Excellent verbal, analytical and persuasive written communications skills necessary to communicate and work with partners, sponsors, and potential clients. Ability to present complex or highly technical information to non-technical constituents.
Organizational skills to prioritize ongoing and new projects.
Comprehensive knowledge of best practices in the industry, as well as all relevant federal, state and university compliance regulations.
Ability to network and interact in a complex and diverse organization and to convey a collaborative and solutions-oriented style of management.
