American University seeks an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to provide collaborative academic leadership for the International Accelerator Program, a partnership between American University and Shorelight Education, Inc. (“the Partnership”) In collaboration with the Managing Director, s/he will lead the development and delivery of innovative highest-quality gateway programs for international, non-native English speaking students in the International Accelerator Programs (IAP, MAP, and American Collegiate). S/he is responsible for maintaining academic program quality and adherence with AU standards, guiding the curriculum and faculty instruction, the application of American University academic policies and regulations, to ensure the successful academic progression of conditionally accepted international students at the undergraduate and graduate level to American University as well as international students seeking admission to other US based universities and colleges. Together with the Managing Director, the incumbent provides oversight of key functions associated with student success and learning outcomes and produces periodic and annual reports to relevant stakeholders. Key oversight functions include but are not limited to internal and external academic governance approvals, facilitating programmatic accreditation, curriculum development and internal review, and the implementation and oversight of academic processes in close collaboration with relevant colleagues in academic units and administrative unitsaround campus. The position manages compliance with the Academic Integrity Code, and works closely with other associate and assistant deans of other academic units, the English Language & Training Academy (in the School of Professional & Extended Studies), , and relevant administrative support units such as the Office of the University Registrar, International Student and Scholar Service, and the Office of Enrollment/Admissions, among others in matters related to faculty and teaching assignments, and academic program implementation..
The incumbent will serve as the primary liaison between other academic and student support units across campus and the Partnership. S/he represents the Partnership on relevant university academic committees as assigned, and in meetings with other academic and students support service leadership at American University. S/he will serve as co-chair of the Academic and Quality Assurance Subcommittee and serve as an advocate for the Partnership at American University, in inter-institutional meetings with other universities and/or Shorelight Education.
This is a full-time, 12 month, faculty-administrator position without tenure based in the School of Professional & Extended Studies, unless the candidate already holds tenure or has a term (non-tenured) appointment elsewhere at American University. The individual will be expected to teach a reduced course load with course releases for administrative responsibilities in accordance with American University and home academic unit standards. The position reports to the Dean of the individual’s home school in which the faculty appointment rests, with a dotted line to the Vice Provost for Academic Administration as well as the International Accelerator Program Managing Director. S/he is accountable to the International Accelerator Program Steering Committee and the IAP Managing Director who serves as the lead representative of the Partnership. Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching and academic/administrative leadership experience at American University. Review of applications will begin May 14, 2018.
Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited university; open field and rank
At least three years of senior level academic administrative experience in higher education such as program or center director, department chair or assistant/associate dean, or similar responsibilities at university-wide levels of service (faculty senate, provost or president’s office/level).
Prior experience in curricular development or management, academic advisement and/or student/faculty development.
Strong familiarity with student learning assessment metrics and analytics.
Strong written and oral communication and strategic planning skills are essential.
Prior teaching or work experience in cross-cultural settings working with international students and/or teaching English as a second language is highly desirable.
