Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice Provost, the Associate Director of Counseling and Outreach will be responsible for all aspects related to LMU's undergraduate and graduate financial aid counseling and outreach programs. Responsibilities include the training and supervision of department's financial aid counselors and student employees. This position is also responsible for supervising the Financial Aid Office's front office and reception area.The Associate Director develops and coordinates outreach activities with various on and off-campus partnerships, including, but not limited to the Office of Undergraduate Admission and Registrar, Ethnic and Intercultural Services, Student Affairs, Study Abroad, Veteran's Programs and Student Financial Services as well as local high schools and community organizations. The Associate Director is a member of the Financial Aid Office Senior Management Team, the Enrollment Management Leadership Group and the Student Accounts and Financial Aid Office Leadership Group.
Typically a Bachelor's degree with knowledge of federal and state regulations. Equivalent experience in higher education may supplement coursework. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
Ability to successfully manage a team with the ability to assess and provide guidance on a regular basis. Work accurately with high volume and instill similar standard with the counseling unit. Monitor the work of others and their programs that report to the supervisory position. Experience in speaking with families in one on one and group sessions publicly. Able to ensure customer service practices within the team. Ability to understand and interpret written directions to specific situations; maintain confidence and confidential information; compose letters and reports as needed; deal effectively with a wide variety of individuals and situations requiring diplomacy, friendliness, poise and firmness. Must make decisions involving independent judgment and requiring coordination of various facts to communicate well with students, parents and other professionals.
Minimum four years working in financial aid counseling with knowledge of financial aid processes, programs, verification, need analysis, student budgets, loans, disbursements, return of funds and supervisory responsibilities.
The broad knowledge base of financial aid practices and regulations are necessary to assist in the communication and messaging efforts with students and their families. Knowledge of common personal computer applications, including but not limited to MS Outlook, Office, Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint. Additional knowledge of programs utilizing SQL and government websites, such as Webgrants and COD are preferred.
Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral). Independent judgment and requiring coordination of various facts to communicate well with student, parents and other professionals.
