Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Business Specialist for the NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE). This position reports to the Business Manager of SEBS-NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE). The Business Specialist provides accounting services for sponsored programs including preparing pre-award budgets, project expense forecasts, account reconciliations, post-award close-outs and grant administration. The Business Specialist completes all work consistent with an understanding of the mission, vision, role and goals of OCPE, NJAES, and the land grant mission of Rutgers University.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides overall administrative management and coordination of purchasing, personnel, effort reporting and policy interpretation within a complex university unit.
Analyzes and reviews financial data, assists with department account reconciliations, prepares financial statements and reports for both internal and external purposes.
Resolves a diverse range of problems consistent with an understanding of mission, vision, role, and goals of the business unit and consistent with a comprehensive understanding of accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable regulations, and university policies and procedures.
Interprets, communicates, and implements policies and practices to meet the needs of a diverse client population.
Works independently, with broadly defined work objectives, and limited review of overall results.
Performs professional work requiring specialized to general knowledge in the field of grant accounting/finance, and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, regulations, terminology, and applied bases in area of specialization.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of grant accounting principles and practices.
Also requires a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in non-profit grant and contract administration.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and perform detailed work with accuracy in a fast-pace, high-pressure environment prone to interruptions.
Excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey for business demands.
Experience in a higher education setting.
All Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Travel to offsite meetings is required (Rutgers does not control the accessibility of non-Rutgers locations, but the majority of meeting sites are at University and State / County / Local government buildings that offer access ramps, elevators, etc. to assist those with mobility limitations).
Dress code is business casual/business professional as necessary for internal and external client meetings.
This position will be occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours to manage response to mission-critical, time-sensitive issues.
