The Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes (TRI) is the product of an innovative affiliation between Florida Hospital and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute that bridges the gap between discovery research and clinical care. The TRI brings together the complementary strengths of Sanford-Burnham's basic science prowess and advanced research technologies and Florida Hospital's compassionate, comprehensive clinical care and clinical/translational research expertise to accelerate the discovery and development of new approaches to diagnose, treat, and prevent obesity, diabetes, and their cardiovascular complications.

The Associate Scientist - TRI Faculty MD is responsible for leading research at the TRI and participating in the development of Industry/NIH/Pharmaceutical research that supports the TRI scientific research plan. Under the direction of a Senior Scientist, the Scientific Director, or Administrative Director, the Associate Scientist has annual revenue accountabilities, is responsible for post-doctoral staff assisting with research and provides guidance to other support staff in the performance of protocol-specific tasks. The Associate Scientist ensures all research performed under their direction is in compliance with all Florida Hospital, TRI, local, state, and federal policies and procedures. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
5-10 years of experience in the clinical/translational research environment
Established competency in research and the regulatory environment as evidenced by published research and peer reviewed work
Proven history of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and/or Pharmaceutical research in the areas of diabetes, metabolism and the metabolic origins of cardiovascular disease
Supervisory experience in an academic/teaching environment with career development of staff
Knowledge of all regulatory requirements that pertain to clinical/medical research
Experience in Calorimetry or Multi-Nuclear Spectroscopy or Laboratory operations (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Current, valid State of Florida license as a Medical Doctor
Current ACLS certification

Leads the construction and submission of investigator-initiated research protocols for external funding.
Responsible for generating increasing research revenue from industry, government (NIH) and pharmaceutical grants in the performance of research to reach $600,000 in annual revenue.
Leads protocol, consent and investigator brochure review.
Actively participates in TRI management committee meetings.
Ensures that all research performed under their direction is in compliance with all Florida Hospital, TRI, local, state, and federal policies and procedures. Ensures that the protocols and written grants conform to the regulations that govern these areas.
Ensures that IRB and NIH education and compliance requirements are fulfilled.
Recruits and mentors junior and associate faculty. Responsible for the hiring, management and development of post-doctoral staff who are assisting with research in a junior capacity. Provides guidance to other support staff in the performance of protocol-specific tasks.
