Research & Industrial Liaison OfficerJob Code: 4112Grade: JFTE: 100%, exempt, 3 Year Fixed TermSchool of Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the School of Engineering at Stanford University is seeking a Research & Industrial Liaison Officer for its National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Re-inventing the Nation's Urban Water Infrastructure, ReNUWIt. The ERC is an interdisciplinary, multi-institution research center whose goal is to change the ways in which we manage urban water. This is a 3-year fixed term appointment. This position supports both the research and the industrial/practitioner outreach mission of ReNUWIt. With the Director and Deputy-Director, the RILO assesses the progress of research projects towards attainment of systems-level goals and works with faculty to evaluate research outcomes. The RILO designs a vision for the industrial/practitioner program, manages the execution of the program and is responsible for promoting industrial engagement and sustaining membership. The RILO leads practitioner outreach activities for translating innovations into workable solutions and develops executable plans consistent with available budgets. The position requires an inspirational technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field of environmental engineering and science with respect to water infrastructure and urban water resources and themes of the ERC. Problem-solving requires intellectual understanding of the field, nuanced assessments of research collaborations and outcomes, and analysis of industry long-term planning and opportunities for sponsored projects. Practical experience in the field required. The incumbent will manage programs that include working with faculty and researchers in both technical and social science fields, formulating strategies and administering policies, managing fund raising and resources with a high degree of autonomy. Manages ongoing industry partnerships.
Communicates with industrial partners about new and ongoing projects and research testbeds using multiple communication platforms.
Represents the program to governing boards, outside agencies, and the public to increase awareness of the ERC's innovation programs.
Facilitates ongoing discussions with industry partners regarding ReNUWIt's sustainability post NSF funding.
Research Program Management
Manages and tracks the research program across four member universities. Makes recommendations to center leadership on the direction of research.
Directs and oversees in-progress reviews of research projects as well as project reporting.
Responsible for and contributes substantially to outreach and technology transfer, industrial practitioner relations, and organizational involvement in innovation and entrepreneurship activities.
Support for ERC activities
Plans and manages ReNUWIt's Annual Meeting, Industrial Advisory Board Meeting, and Science Advisory Board Meeting.
Manages annual reporting to the NSF, including but not limited to compiling ReNUWIt's Annual Report and writing the Innovation Ecosystem chapter.
Provides support for grant applications, proposals, and other information requests.
Represents the center at utility and industry meetings.
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree in Environmental Engineering or related field preferred. Experience working on water issues desired.
Exceptional initiative, resourcefulness, and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead and work effectively with a high degree of autonomy as well as collaboratively with ReNUWIt faculty, students, and industrial/practitioner partners.
Superb abilities in technical writing and communicating to professional and lay audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills to inspire trust and motivate team members and external stakeholders. Willingness to listen to and learn from others.
Ability to independently prioritize work based on an organization's strategic vision/goals. A practical bent with a focus on applied solutions and turning ideas into action.
Entrepreneurial skills, ability to function effectively in large complex organizations.
Demonstrated experience in project management.
Experience with or ability to learn a variety of web-based tools, including database management, invoicing, and website development.
