Department Information
Located in academic buildings and research centers throughout the university, Engineering Technology Service (ETS) is the foundational support for enterprise, academic and research computing systems and services for the College of Engineering (https://ets.osu.edu). Established in 2015, our newly formed organization provides a hybrid model that promotes centralized shared service offerings along with highly skilled distributed technology professionals aligned to advance the mission of the College of Engineering (https://engineering.osu.edu/strategic-plan). ETS strives to provide world-class service and support, and to be leaders in the strategic use of technology at the Ohio State University.Position Overview The Systems Administrator is primarily responsible for the installation, upgrade, and maintenance of the distribution and access layers of the College of Engineering (CoE) network, and is part of the operations team, which provides Tier 2 and 3 operations support in the multi-platform (Windows, MacOS, and Linux) CoE computing environment, including server and endpoint management. This position provides expert technical consultation on IT planning, development, and operations of networking, endpoint, and other college-wide computing services. The Systems Administrator functions with a high level of autonomy to identify hardware and software needs. The position also installs, configures and maintains network switches and routers, and installs and maintains network systems security and integrity elements. The Systems Administrator also identifies and implements strategies and solutions to upgrade, assemble, deploy and maintain integrity of services to support day-to-day operations that resolves network, hardware, and software related issues in support of the team's Tier 2 and 3 duties. This position acts as Data Network Administrator (DNA) and maintains inventory and other configuration items for network devices. The Systems Administrator assists in auditing, reporting, and inventory compilation, and also compiles information and develops specifications for quotations in support of researchers and faculty. Another key component of the role is to interact with the College CIO and other computing resource managers within the college and university, and ensuring all university, federal and state mandated programs are implemented and maintained. The System Administrator ensures all university and college policies are followed, adheres to Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practice framework in an effort to ensure the availability, security and performance of infrastructure systems and fulfillment of customer Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Additional Information: The position may be on call or work extended hours if required. Performance Objectives Installs, upgrades, and maintains the distribution and access layers of the College of Engineering (CoE) network installs, configures and maintains network switches and routers

Serves as part of the operations team, providing Tier 2 and 3 operations support in a multi-platform engineering computing environment

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, or vocational or technical school degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated technical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and analytical thinking; ability to function with a high level of autonomy; strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; good organizational skills with ability to provide technical leadership on project efforts; strong experiential knowledge of network hardware and Layer 2 and 3 networking; exposure and some experience with endpoint management systems such as SCCM, Puppet, and/or JAMF; experience scripting in support of systems administration using PowerShell, Perl, shell scripting, or other scripting tools. Desired Qualifications: Ability to lift 25 pounds, climb stairs, and have good dexterity; experience with an ITSM such as Cherwell or ServiceNow; ability to provide technical guidance to less experienced peers; systems administrator experience in two or more of the following: IT Security, Network Services, and/or Systems Operation Configuration/Management tools; industry certifications in one or more of the following: ITIL v3 Foundations, CompTIA Network+, CCNA, Apple ACMT, Microsoft MCSA or MCSE or MCP; experience working and contributing to a diverse environment.
