The Patient Record Abstractor III plays a critical role in the department's business operations because it is the patient coded data that is submitted to payers insurance companies, government agencies, for expense reimbursement. Under the general supervision of the manager or designee, the incumbent independently abstracts and codes patient reports to ensure accurate professional and technical billing that optimizes reimbursement and meets all compliance standards. The incumbent's work is performed in a hospital-based ancillary service setting and will include coding and billing for the following: professional fees, technical fees, multiple disciplines or sub-specialties, and resident staff services. Prior to submitting charges, the incumbent is required to review documentation for all services provided identifying all billable services, and discussing with the physician / provider when discrepancies occur in documentation. Upon completion of abstracting/coding the Patient Record Abstractor III enters charges in EPIC. This position also works all coding work queues and performs various reconciliations.--Must pass the UCDHS Coding Skills Assessment prior to interview--Working knowledge of abstracting and coding using ICD-10 CPT and HCPCS coding guidelines--Knowledge and experience with ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS guidelines related to assigning single and sequencing multiple diagnosis and procedure codes for reimbursement and data collection --Knowledge of Evaluation and Management visit levels utilizing Health Care Financing Administration and CMS guidelines for teaching hospitals--Comprehensive knowledge of medical diagnostic and procedural terminology --Knowledge of disease processes, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology--Knowledge of Federal, State and local government regulations and requirements which pertain to patient care information--Knowledge of third party payer reimbursement requirements and an understanding of relative values for multi-medical specialties, encounters and procedures in an outpatient setting --Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical and clinical billing information to physicians and clinical staffPREFERRED - CCS-P, CCS, CPC, or CPCH certification SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - THIS POSITION MAY BE SUBJECT TO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG SCREEN, LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING, MEDICAL EVALUATION CLEARANCE, AND FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT. - Must be able to work occasional overtime.
