The Student Development Specialist II is a full-time advisor devoted to the needs and concerns of the Graduate and Professional Student Council overseeing the Student Research Week (SRW) student director, the Grad Camp Director, and assisting directly in all aspects of the Council s activities. Provides professional and supervisory skills for developing, planning, promoting, and implementing student developmental programs, activities, and/or services. Assists in developing and promoting unity, teamwork and communication of the committee through leadership development and training.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
One year of experience in student affairs work or related specialty with Bachelor s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. No experience required with Master s degree.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students.
Attends meetings and conferences concerning students and with student groups at times beyond usual working hours.
Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master s degree in student affairs, counseling, or related field.
Related extra-curricular experience and/or student development experiences and/or student government advising. .
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Graduate work in student development advising or experience and knowledge of advising graduate students.
Shows an appreciation and celebration of diversity in working, supporting, and coaching a diverse student population.
Serve as the primary advisor to the Graduate and Professional Student Council. Attend committee and general assembly meetings. Meet one on one with officers and members as appropriate. Support and advise an executive committee of 15-20 members.
Supervise and advise Student Research Week Director. Assist with the formation and advising of the Student Research Week committee. Supervise other aspects of the Student Research Week Director commitments. Attend regularly scheduled Student Research Week meetings, including all funding meetings.
Advise, coordinate and assist in facilitation of Graduate and Professional Student Council programming efforts, including Grad Camp, Inter-disciplinary dinners and banquet. Manage, coordinate and facilitate Graduate and Professional Student Services Programs, including Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week, Grad Mentors, and Graduate Student Wine Tasting.
Advise Graduate and Professional Student Council related publications, marketing, communication, and website development.
Coordinate training and activities that enhance the graduate student leadership experience focused in communication, unity, team building, diversity and conflict management. Shows an appreciation and celebration of diversity in working, supporting, and coaching a diverse student population.
Oversee a multi-faceted budget that serves a number of large programs and commitments and pulls in revenue from multiple funding sources. Assist student leaders with decisions regarding allocations and expenses. Assist in the coordination and collaboration of the monthly reconciliation process between student leaders and department staff. Assist with the annual budgeting process.
Assist in the total development of the Division of Student Affairs through participation in University, Division and Departmental committees and task forces. Advance the philosophy of multiculturalism and actively promote diversity in staffing, programming, and student leadership. Attend, collaborate and serve on relevant committees which can include the following: (1) Graduate Council, (2) Graduate Operations Committee and (3)Graduate Orientation. Evening and weekend work and/or travel may be required. Other duties as assigned.
