Mercy High School is a Catholic, all-girls high school of 400 students located in Burlingame, CA. It is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, run by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, founded by Catherine McAuley and housed in Kohl Mansion.
The Head of School provides spiritual, strategic / structural, academic, athletic and student leadership and direction for the long-term interests and welfare of the school corporation in collaboration with the members of the corporation (Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Education System of the Americas-MESA) and the Board of Directors.
Promote ongoing fidelity to the school’s Catholic identity and the mission, core values and tradition, in addition to ensuring the embodiment of charism of the Sisters of Mercy;
Lead, supervise and develop the Leadership Team consisting of the Assistant Head of School for Academics; Assistant Head of School for Student Life; Campus Minister; Director of Mission Integration; Director of Marketing; Director of Admissions; Director of Finance; Director of Advancement; Director of Technology; Director of Facilities and Grounds;
Work with the Board to develop the school’s strategic plan, while leading / executing strategy and aligning it with the areas of academics, student Life, spirituality, athletics and finances;
Advance the educational mission of the school working to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence for the students, while preparing them for success in future studies;
Ensure the school obtains, maintains and retains appropriate accreditations;
Ensure and maintains strong extracurricular and athletic programs to develop an overall balanced school life for the students;
In collaboration with the Board and Director of Advancement, continue to effectuate fundraising; engagement of donors; devise new strategies to build the school’s endowment, including planned giving and capital campaign, accordingly;
Participate as an ex-officio voting member of the Board and may be a member of all Board committees;
Communicate relevant information regularly and accordingly with the Board, faculty, staff, students, parents and alumnae;
Foster an environment of inclusion by welcoming diversity among employees and students in connection to culture, race, ethnicity and religious backgrounds, as well as sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic levels and political affiliations;
In collaboration with the director of Finance, provide effective financial oversight of the school including developing and submitting annual operating and capital budgets for Board approval; ensuring continual improvement of the financial strength and the goals are met; provide oversight for the school’s P&L; effectively manage tuition revenue system; participate in the annual audit, while identifying additional opportunities for financial aid and scholarships for students;
Collaborate with the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the leaders of the Sisters of Mercy, other Mercy schools and the leaders of other religious institute schools, accordingly;
Provide oversight of the school building, operations of the school and the technology program;
Continue to develop strategies for effective student recruitment / retention; actively participate in the admissions process and decisions regarding financial aid, in collaboration with the Director of Admissions;
In collaboration with the Alumnae Relations Manager and Director of Marketing, continue to strengthen the alumnae program and promote the vitality of the Mercy Parent Club;
In collaboration with the Director of Marketing, develop, oversee and provide support in relation to effective marketing plans, school communications and school functions / events;
Recruit, hire, evaluate and manage staff, while consulting with the school’s HR advisor regarding payroll and related HR issues;
Ensure compliance with the MESA, federal, state, county and city laws governing the school;
Work with the Kohl Mansion events staff to develop and oversee the mansion’s rental program.
