The Utilities Electrician, under general supervision, installs maintains, and services electrical systems associated with the University's utilities plant.
Required Education and Expericne:
High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Three years of combined experience in industrial, commercial and overhead/underground electrical distribution systems or completion of an apprenticeship/assistantship program as an electrician.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Must have a valid Texas Class âœCâ Driverâ™s License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to read and comprehend written and oral instructions in English and communicate effectively.
Should be able to read schematic diagrams and prints of electrical systems.
Should have working knowledge of TTR, insulation resistance tester, volt ohm meter, and phasing stick.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Training from a military, accredited institution, or graduation from a federally certified apprenticeship program.
Completion of 40 hours of formal classroom training in high volume cable splicing and terminating, or approved training in industrial motors, motor controls, relaying, and electrical motor theory.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Journeyman Electricianâ™s License.
Texas Class B vehicle operatorâ™s license
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of bucket trucks, digger trucks, and cable pulling trucks.
Installs and repairs high voltage cables. Tests cables with various test equipment, such as phasing and insulation testing, street and parking lot lights, well pump motors, and control circuits.
Locates cable that ranges from low to high voltage throughout campus for various contractors.
Tests and repairs generators and exciter control circuits.
Installs and/or repairs control cables from the utility plant to various utility plants and substations.
Bending and installing EMT, rigid, plasti-bond, and sealtite conduit.
Maintains industrial equipment such as electrical systems related to generators, boilers, chillers, variable frequency drives, electronic exciters, and voltage regulators.
Assists in Training Assistants and UES Trainees.
Installs, repairs, and calibrates metering relaying of low to medium voltage switchgear and station battery systems, including chargers, generators, and exciter control circuits.Performs other duties as assigned.
Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, stand for extended periods of time, and will frequently be required to lift or move heavy materials. Must be able to work in heat and cold.
Contributes to a safe work environment by reporting accidents and unsafe working conditions, uses proper personal protective equipment, follows safety procedures outlined in Material Safety Data Sheets, and participates in safety training.
