The University of Maryland, School of Nursing (UMSON) is seeking a dynamic academic leader for the role of Associate Dean of the PhD Program who can align with our core values: accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, knowledge, leadership. The Associate Dean of the PhD Program is member of the Dean's leadership team and collaborates with other Associate Deans, Department Chairs, and faculty to advance the strategic goals of the school. This position reports to the Dean and is 50% administrative, while the remainder will be devoted to one's own research, practice, teaching and service.
The University of Maryland, School of Nursing (UMSON) provides educational programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science (MS), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The UMSON pioneered the PhD Nursing program in 1979 and has since been consistently ranked in the top ten among best Nursing PhD programs according to U.S. News and World Report. It was also the first to offer a PhD program with an emphasis in nursing informatics. Currently more than 50 students are enrolled in the UMSON PhD program. The UMSON received $11.4 million in extramural funding in FY 2017. It is ranked 8th in receipt of NIH funding among public schools of nursing, with approximately $3.4 million in NIH research grants. Currently the UMSON boasts 150 full- and 46 part-time faculty members of whom approximately 73% have doctorates, forming one of the largest doctorally- prepared faculties among schools of nursing in the world. UMSON has pioneered a variety of innovative educational programs, including the nation's first master's specialty. UMSON is ranked in the top 10 nationally for all ranked DNP and Master's specialties. The total UMSON student enrollment exceeds 2,300, including more than 1,000 graduate students of whom approximately 515 are doctoral students.
UMSON is part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) graduate and professional campus that also includes the Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Social Work, providing numerous opportunities for collaboration. Its interdisciplinary graduate school has more than 40 degree programs in the biosciences, law, and social work, and is one of the fastest growing biomedical research centers in the nation, totaling over $550 million in extramural research annually. The unique composition of the campus enables health professionals to address clinical care, public policy, and social issues through multidisciplinary research, scholarship, and community action. Primary Responsibilities: The Associate Dean of the PhD Program , who reports to the Dean, is responsible for the administration, strategic planning, and evaluation of the PhD program, including:
Serve as a member of the School's Senior Academic Leadership Team
Provide leadership for the PhD program and the resources that support the program
Develop and implement new initiatives that continually advance the scholarship and research capacity of the students
Oversee the recruitment, retention, and advancement of students
Secure resources to support student progress including ﬁnancial aid, educational resources and programs, conference/meeting presentations/attendance, research collaborations, and proposal submissions
Interface, liaise ,and collaborate with the UMB Graduate School for issues related to PhD progression criteria, candidacy requirements, and dissertation procedures
Facilitate inter-professional interactions among students, faculty, researchers, and representatives of relevant UMB, government, and private agencies
Evaluate program, policies, and procedures related to the PhD program
Secure research funding from diverse sources
Collaborate with department chairs to coordinate teaching assignments and course offerings for the PhD program
Teach PhD courses related to individual's expertise
PhD or equivalent research intensive doctoral degree in Nursing or related field
Evidence of sustained program of research in areas aligned with UMSON and affiliated university recognized organized research centers (Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan Organized Research Center, Center for Health Outcomes Research, Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research)
Experience chairing PhD dissertation committees in Nursing or related discipline
Demonstrated leadership and communication skills
Eligible for appointment as tenured associate or full professor
Eligible to serve as a regular faculty member of the UMB Graduate School
