WILLIAM & MARY LAW SCHOOL, in Williamsburg, Virginia, has a Director of the Law Library and Clinical Professor of Legal Research full-time continuing non-tenure eligible (NTE) faculty position that reports to the Dean of the Law School available beginning June 2019. This position will hold a presumption of continuation and security of position in accordance with the spirit and intent of the relevant ABA standards.
Duties include managing all aspects of the library to preserve and enhance its central role in the life of the W&M Law School. This includes setting the strategic directions of the law library, personnel and budget management, collection development, and research/reference support to library patrons – especially the Law School community. The Director also is responsible for establishing and implementing both technological and traditional methods of delivery of information to support the research needs of faculty and students, for overseeing the development and management of the library’s webpage and the W&M Law School Scholarship Repository, for ensuring compliance with ABA and other standards, and for managing the physical space of the library. The Director actively participates in the governance of the Law School and the College.
Demonstrated success as an innovative administrator with a record of accomplishment in a law library who can bring vision and coherent planning to the institution, as well as the ability to attract and develop a superb staff;
Demonstrated ability to support the research and scholarly needs of faculty, students, and staff;
Demonstrated understanding of the scope, process, and demands of a law school library and the need to align services to changes taking place in legal education, the legal profession, and legal publishing;
Demonstrated ability to build relationships and partnerships at the university and the law school, and in the larger academic and librarian communities; excellent communication, presentation, and teaching skills; and
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills indicating an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred candidates will have a progressive vision of the role of law libraries in legal education in providing leadership to enhance library services. W&M law librarians teach the research component of the Law School’s Legal Practice Program, and the director should be forward thinking about enhancing instruction to students.
