Job Summary The Director of Fund Development is responsible for raising $60 million to enable the Louisville Urban League and Russell: A Place of Promise to complete substantial capital projects and implement related initiatives in Louisville’s Russell Neighborhood (collectively, the “Project”).
The Louisville Urban League has secured the right to develop the 24-acre Heritage West Property for a sports & learning complex, a League-operated mixed sports complex anchored by an indoor track and field facility capable of hosting national and international events. Russell: A Place of Promise is a new initiative to build wealth for existing Russell neighborhood residents and businesses through homeownership, business development and ownership, workforce development, education and health strategies, and the rehabilitation of a 200,000 square foot historic industrial complex for mixed uses. https://insiderlouisville.com/government/louisville-metro-announces-5m-grant-for-russell-initiative/
In addition to leading fundraising efforts, the Director of Fund Development is responsible for providing strategy, leadership, direction, coordination and management of all levels of giving for all aspects of the Project. The fundraising strategy will include major gifts, annual giving, sponsorships, fund development, planned giving, corporate giving and targeted campaigns.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Work with League and Russell: A Place of Promise leadership and teams to develop a fund development strategy to proactively identify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward a portfolio of major donors to strengthen and diversify funding sources.
Work with League and Russell: A Place of Promise leadership and teams to provide strategic leadership to effectively communicate the mission, goals and accomplishments to donors, prospective donors and the broader community.
Manage League and Russell: A Place of Promise leadership and team involvement in fund development, including but not limited to setting goals, expectations and roles for all parties in fundraising activities.
Oversee portfolio of all gift requests.
Oversee all project related League and Russell: A Place of Promise fund development activities, manage the day to day fund development operations, and monitor adequacy of activities through coordination of leadership, committees (as applicable), and governing bodies.
Cultivate principal and major gifts, solicits gifts, and build structure for donor stewardship after gifts are made.
Develop and memorialize gift acceptance policy for all fundraising activity for all aspects of the Project.
Build relationships with prospective donors through visits, events, correspondence and regular calls.
Coordinate with communications team to ensure effective strategies for donor outreach.
Ensure ethical and appropriate financial administration of contributed income, including overseeing the donor and prospect records, and following all regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact donations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proven organizational, oral and written communication skills;
Proven track record of success in direct solicitation of gifts, including prior capital campaign and/or documented track record of closing 7-figure gifts;
Advanced skills in building prospect portfolio, knowledge of how to research, identify and cultivate new donors, including family foundations, corporate donors and individual donors with the capacity to make larger gifts;
Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of organizational and project-based goals and objectives, and in securing gifts;
Ability to successfully deal with confidential, complex situations involving coordination and consultation with high level constituents;
Demonstrated sound judgment, tact and a proven record of effective initiative;
Must be proactive, self-starter able to self-direct and operate with little oversight;Must be available evenings and weekends for programs and Project-related activities;
Must have superb analytical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills and decision-making abilities;
Must have excellent project management skills which, in partnership with the League and Russell: A Place of Promise leadership, will drive the development and implementation of a successful fundraising strategy for the Track and Russell: A Place of Promise;
Dependable transportation and ability to regularly travel out of state.
Education and/or Experience
A graduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
A minimum of 15 years professional development and fund-raising experience.
Experience with directing a major capital campaign
Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members and donors.
