The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an opening for a Regional Economist - Senior Extension / Extension Associate in the ILR School Extension/Outreach Division Cornell in Buffalo Co-Lab.
The position of Regional Economist Senior Extension / Extension Associate within the Extension/ Outreach Division of the ILR School is responsible for community outreach, objective, analytic content on economic, labor market and demographic trends. The focus of this position is on Western New York State, analyzed within the context of both NYS and U.S. trends, and through the lens of improving sustainable economic development in WNYS, bettering the lives of those who work, and creating a more equitable inclusive regional economy. The position is responsible for developing and delivering outreach research and insights that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and contributing to public discourse and education on these topics.
The Regional Economist positon is a non-tenure track position that may be appointed for a term of up to three years and may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the appropriate Executive Director and Associate Dean and available funding and work. This person will report to the Executive Director of ILR's Buffalo Co-Lab program, with a dotted line to the Associate Dean for Outreach and Sponsored Research for any ILR-wide assignments or contributions. Position rank will be determined by qualifications and experience.
Master's, ABD or PhD degree in Economics, Business, applied social research or related field.
At least two to three years of work experience related to labor market data, econometric trend analysis, and/or database management.
Knowledge of statistical, analytical, and econometric techniques and experience in multi-equation econometric model building. Ability to address unique and dynamic market, industry and organizational structures and issues.
Proficiency in handling and analyzing large datasets with attention to details to ensure data quality and knowledge of relational databases (e.g., Stata, R, SAS, SPSS, SQL).
Exposure to state and local government data/information as it pertains to economic activity, labor markets, demographics, and state finances.
Accountable, independent self-starter with the ability to assess and develop, with minimal guidance, unique and objective analytical approaches that fit project needs.
Ability to interface with stakeholders from labor, industry executives, elected politicians from across the political perspective, leaders of nonprofits and grant-making foundations and academic faculty.
Excellent communication skills for explaining technical concepts and presenting complicated results to a diverse audience, technical and non-technical.
Demonstrated excellence in written reports and public speaking.
Ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines, including multiple projects concurrently, while working individually or overseeing ad-hoc teams.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative environments and to contribute to the innovation and outcome success of a team is imperative.
PhD in economics, statistics, business, applied social research or related field.
Ability to creatively and objectively approach and solve problems in instances where hard data is sparse.
Experience with focus on Western NY or New York State.
Demonstrated experience in successful grant writing and grant management.
