Our lab was among the first to describe the process of hypothalamic gliosis that occurs in obese rodents and humans (JCI 2012 v122 p153). Potential projects will be selected from ongoing research areas including determining the functional contribution of microglia and astrocytes to obesity and diabetes pathogenesis and identifying pathways that govern the crosstalk between glia and neurons that regulate energy balance. The candidate will also participate in our program of developing glial cell tools including chemogenetic, optogenetic, cell transfer, and transcriptomics studies.
We are seeking a qualified postdoctoral fellow (Ph.D. and/or M.D. required) to begin as soon as possible. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, or stem cell biology. As this postdoctoral position is funded through an NIH institutional training grant, we can only consider applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents (i.e. green card holders).
The University of Washington is an outstanding venue for metabolism research with an NIH-funded Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (NORC) and Diabetes Research Center (DRC). The lab is contained within the UW Diabetes Institute, which includes members working on many different aspects of metabolism, physiology, and pathophysiology.
