American Progress has an immediate opening for the Vice President of Democracy and Government Reform. The Vice President of Democracy and Government Reform will lead a dynamic, high-performing team committed to ensuring our government, courts, and elected representatives work for the benefit of all Americans. The Democracy and Government Reform team is committed to developing and advocating for policies that strengthen the nation’s democracy by protecting and expanding voting rights; fighting political corruption; improving ethics and oversight; creating a fair judiciary; increasing government responsiveness and accountability; and enhancing civic engagement and empowerment.
A core part of the Democracy and Government Reform team’s work includes collaborating with Legal Progress—the legal policy and communications program at American Progress. Its mission is to make the American legal system more progressive by educating the public about why the courts matter; highlighting what is at stake for progressives; providing a conduit for the public to act on judicial nominations, confirmations, and fair courts issues; and developing policy ideas that advance a progressive vision of the law and Constitution. The ideal candidate will have deep policy expertise in democracy and government reform issues, as well as expertise in the legal and courts systems.
Provide day-to-day management of and direct work for the Democracy and Government Reform team, which includes senior fellows, directors, research and advocacy staff, and an assistant.
Work with policy teams, along with the Executive team and other senior American Progress officials, to set the strategic direction of the team.
Develop new ideas to ensure government is responsive to and representative of all Americans.
Assist team members in crafting and timing policy reports and rapid-response documents in a manner that makes them more likely to be relevant to the current debate around democratic and government reforms.
Lead the Legal Progress staff in designing and executing campaign strategies that build political and public support for progressive engagement in judicial nominees.
Engage with elected officials and their staff to build political support for key strategic priorities.
Promote American Progress’ democracy and government reform policy priorities and work products, both inside and outside the organization.
Maintain relationships between the Democracy and Government Reform team and other American Progress teams, including the Executive, Government Affairs, Communications, Development, and Administrative teams.
Strengthen the Democracy and Government Reform team’s programs by developing and maintaining relationships with funders who support them.
Represent American Progress’ Democracy and Government Reform team to policy decision-makers, the public, the media, and other outside groups and individuals as necessary.
Work closely with progressive allies to align strategic priorities and goals.
Keep American Progress staff updated on news and events related to democracy and government reform policy debates in Congress and the administration; respond to requests for information from the Executive team and other senior staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements:
Juris Doctor degree and management experience required.
Ten-plus years of relevant policy experience with a proven track record in the field.
Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, long-term plans and implement them successfully.
Substantive familiarity with both democracy and government reform issues, as well as the federal judicial nominations process, key players, and the prominent legal issues that arise in federal courts.
Knowledge of federal policymaking and working with Congress and agencies, as well as established relationships with policymakers, advocates, and community leaders across the progressive landscape, both inside Washington, D.C., and in the states.
Excellent written and oral communications and presentation skills.
Experience working with and motivating grassroots advocates outside Washington, D.C.
Strong political instincts and experience working with coalitions.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrated aptitude at being self-sufficient and self-directed.
