Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 50 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.
The Investment Specialist (Specialist) will join Wellington Management's Multi-Asset product management team with a focus on Alternative Market Premia Strategies (AMPS), our platform of alternative, systematic, and multi-asset investment strategies. With over $10 billion in assets under management, the AMPS team designs strategies to capture returns from three sources: alternative risk premia (i.e., carry, trend, convergence, and equity style premia), dynamic asset allocation of traditional beta, and idiosyncratic returns from fundamental alpha. Our portfolio construction process is built on a framework of volatility-based risk-budgeting. It is implemented on a global basis using derivatives and physical securities across equities, rates, currencies, and commodities. Strategies on our platform compete in various sectors, including long/short multi-strategy hedge funds, macro funds, alternative risk premia, and risk parity funds, with bespoke versions seeking to achieve specific client objectives. Ours is a fast growing, dynamic global book of business. The Specialist will be crucial in our ability to (1) seek, capture, and service new business, (2) respond to existing clients, (3) manage the day-to-day responsibilities of a growing, sophisticated book of business.
Product Management serves as the bridge that connects our investment team to the firm's clients and prospects. As a result, this role requires investment expertise with respect to alternative and quantitative investing, product development and business management acumen, and a commercial instinct and external proficiency that can drive new business and service our external client base.
To execute these responsibilities, the Investment Specialist will play internal and external roles. Internally, the Specialist will manage the day-to-day business of our platform as a "player/coach." In this capacity, the Specialist will work closely with the Investment Director to set and manage the workload of the team ("coach"), ensuring deliverables are met on time with accuracy, while sharing in all aspects of the workload ("player"). The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to oversee, in collaboration with the Investment Director, a small team through leadership by example, and will play a meaningful role in their mentoring and career development. Specific responsibilities will include: running or overseeing analytics related to performance and risk to create presentation materials and to answer client and prospect requests; fielding and responding to complex, often ambiguous questions, from internal and external sources; drafting responses to requests for proposal (RFP); writing and fact checking monthly and quarterly performance and risk summaries for clients and prospects; drafting internal memoranda supporting new business opportunities; executing capacity and fee negotiations; supporting marketing campaigns; and analyzing competitors to support our existing book of business and product development process.
Externally, the Specialist will work closely with the Investment Director to represent the AMPS platform to drive new business and to provide updates to existing clients on the performance of their investments across a suite of highly technical investment strategies. External representation will start as a small portion of the Specialist's day-to-day responsibilities, but with demonstrated success, external-facing work could grow to be a meaningful proportion of the role.
We are seeking candidates who display the following characteristics:
A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant industry experience, ideally including experience at an asset manager/hedge fund, sell-side firm or management consultancy
Deep investment knowledge with experience in alternative and systematic strategies preferred
Strong commercial instinct and drive coupled with external meeting experience
Desire and ability to mentor and develop junior members of the team
Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a global team
A positive, collegial attitude and high level of professionalism
Willingness and ability to provide and receive direct, transparent feedback
Strong work ethic and grace under pressure
High level of attention to detail
A good sense of humor
Willingness and ability to travel
Bachelor's degree with sterling academic credentials and a record of achievement
MBA and/or progress toward or achievement of the CFA or CAIA is preferred
