The successful candidate will conduct experiments and analysis on the effects of impurity injection on tokamak discharges, aimed at power exhaust, wall conditioning, and pedestal control. The candidate will be based onsite at the DIII-D device in San Diego, CA, and will be partly responsible for operation of the impurity powder dropper.
The successful candidate will be responsible for proposing and conducting experiments, organizing analysis, and disseminating results in the form of talks, posters, and refereed journal articles, principally related to impurity injection on DIII-D with the PPPL developed powder dropper. Power exhaust analysis will benefit from experience with edge transport analysis codes, e.g. SOLPS or UEDGE, while pedestal alterations will benefit from experience in profile fitting and the use of edge stability codes, e.g. ELITE or MISHKA. It is expected that the successful candidate will participate in calibration and operation of the dropper on DIII-D, and will participate in required upgrades. The candidate may also participate in PPPL-coordinated related impurity doping experiments on collaborative devices, e.g. ASDEX-Upgrade, KSTAR or EAST, which would require international travel.

Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or nuclear engineering, with preference given to applicants with experience in boundary physics. Strong experimental, analytical, and English communication skills are required, and experience conducting research on multiple facilities, preferably DIII-D, is highly desired.
