Carnegie Mellon University’s Student Accounts Office is searching for a Director to lead a professional staff that centrally manages and strategically approaches the collection of student accounts receivable for all campus locations. In this new role, you will contribute to the department by providing vital support in the assessment, coordination and improvement of bill payment for all student accounts. You will be charged with developing tools for analysis of current processes and practices, while collaboratively implementing changes.
We are searching for a Director of Student Accounts that will efficiently account, communicate, collect, and report student-related financial activity on behalf of all CMU locations. You will work closely with directors in the division and other campus constituents to develop, implement and communicate cohesive business processes and technical solutions. The link with financial aid is particularly close and requires an understanding of federal compliance and financial aid regulations. In this role, you will prepare in-depth reporting for senior university leadership regarding student account and student loan receivables, and serve as a key contributor to university efforts around student persistence and the student experience.
Core responsibilities will include:
Operations: Develop and implement accounting policies, internal controls, and standard methodologies to ensure efficient and controlled operations with a focus on excellent customer service. Responsible for leading the university’s student accounts and loans receivable. Handle the entire student financial life cycle from matriculation to graduation and beyond, including all invoicing, receipting, and collections activity.
Management and Staff Development: Accountable for the recruitment, hiring, supervision, performance evaluation, mentoring, and professional development of Student Accounts staff. Responsible for ensuring regular and timely training to staff related to regulatory, system, and service components of all student account functions.
Project work: Assess, propose, and guide the development and maintenance of systems to improve customer service, increase efficiencies, and ensure adequate internal control. Serve as the business owner for student accounts-related functionality within the Student Services Suite (S3). Investigate and implement the use of outside vendors and services related to payment, refunding, loan counseling, and collection, as appropriate.
Planning, Reporting and Analysis: Prepare, analyze, and distribute comprehensive reporting to ensure adequate internal control and to serve university leadership in decision-making and planning. Establish key performance measurements in all areas and provide monthly reporting to monitor departmental success. Build and maintain an operational budget, forecast student-related revenue and expense streams, and provide specific recommendations to senior management.
Strategic and operational leadership to division and university: Partner with other managers, administrators, and leaders within Student Financial Services, Enrollment Services and across the Pittsburgh and other campuses, to provide leadership and direction on a student account functions and inform technology-based solutions, and data analysis. Contribute to long-range strategic planning for Student Accounts, Student Financial Services, and Enrollment Services.

Bachelor’s degree in higher education, business administration, or related field required; Master’s preferred.
Minimum five years of experience with accounts receivable and billing, accounts payable, cash management operations, or related experience required; supervisory experience highly desired.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the rules & regulations that govern the treatment of students and related financial activity in the higher education context (Title IV, FERPA, Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, etc.).
Experience with international finance and multi-currency accounting with an in-depth knowledge of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) regulations.
Working knowledge and experience with data analytics using Microsoft Excel, Tableau, or other business analytics tools; knowledge of process mapping using Microsoft Visio or other flowcharting software.
Experience with report writing, sophisticated database queries, system design and implementation, and technical writing preferred.
