The full time clinical instructor has the responsibilities of a licensed registered nurse and must have the knowledge of and adherence to the laws and rules which govern nursing as outlined in the State of Michigan Board of Nursing rules. Individuals are also accountable to following the policies and maintaining the standards as outlined by the University of Detroit Mercy, McAuley School of Nursing (MSON), and those set forth by the clinical agency in which they are overseeing student nurses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
(1) Serves on the Clinical Management and Innovation Team (CMIT) (2) Uses communication, guidance and other strategies to augment the learning process between the theory and clinical courses (3) Provides mentoring, orientation and troubleshooting support to clinical faculty (4) Models professional behavior and standards of practice (5) Utilizes current evidence-based practices while teaching students in the clinical setting (6) Establishes rapport and maintains necessary communication with hospital personnel (7) Participates in clinical orientation as required by the clinical institution (8) Orients students to clinical setting (9) Provides direct supervision to students in patient care areas (10) Conducts pre- and post-clinical conferences with students at appropriate level (11) Represents the University of Detroit Mercy professionally and appropriately at all times (12) Supports the mission and vision of the University and use as a guide for actions (13) Provides ongoing verbal and/or written feedback to students on progress in clinical setting (14) Promotes a clinical learning environment which assists the student and clinical instructors in meeting the clinical objectives (15) Posts and keeps a minimum of 5 office hours and by appointment times for students seeking assistance with clinical issues (16) Posts and keeps a minimal of 5 open lab hours and by appointment times for students seeking assistance with clinical skills including simulation activities (17) Participates in the Dean-appointed CHP Committees (18) Participates in the Associate Dean-appointed MSON Committees (19) Bridges theoretical teaching concepts into clinical application for students and maintains communication with theory instructors as necessary (20) All other duties as assigned
(1) Master of Science Degree in Nursing (2) Maintain compliance with all clinical requirements (3) Current, unencumbered Michigan nursing license (4) Minimal of 5 years of clinical practice experience (5) Experience instructing or precepting nursing students
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) · Maintain necessary certifications to be current in practice · Excellent time management, organizational, and leadership skills
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Current, unencumbered Michigan nursing license
