Project Overview The antibiotic resistance project works to combat antibiotic resistance by developing and advancing research and policy to spur the innovation of new antibiotics and to reduce the use of antibiotics in people and in food animal production.
Position Overview The senior associate, based in Pew's Washington, DC, office, will inform and influence public policy by providing research and programmatic support to achieve the goals of the project. This will include developing subject matter expertise in the drivers of inappropriate antibiotic use, stewardship, and relevant policy interventions; participating in the execution of the project's research and outreach plans; and assisting with convening meetings and stakeholder communications.
Reporting to the senior manager, the senior associate will work closely with the senior officer, human stewardship, and other Pew colleagues in communications, research, government relations, and other areas. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.
Under the direction of the senior manager and guidance of other staff (particularly the senior officer, human stewardship):
Develop relevant subject matter expertise:
Track and analyze research and policy developments affecting human antibiotic stewardship, particularly in inpatient settings.
Proactively identify and monitor positions of influential stakeholders and thought leaders on key stewardship issues.
Contribute to research and publication efforts:
Define and research key policy issues related to human antibiotic stewardship.
Research and produce materials on topics supporting the project's goals, such as establishing national goals to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use, identifying relevant policy interventions, and tracking efforts to reach reduction targets.
Help identify and execute external contracts, grants, and/or letters of agreement to accomplish the project's goals.
Assist in the development of yearly reports on antibiotic use in the U.S.
Contribute to communication and outreach efforts:
Assist in planning, organizing, and coordinating in-person and online convenings of policy makers and other key audiences, e.g. relating to best practices and policies to reduce antibiotic use.
Participate in the development of presentations and talking points to support internal and external communications.
Collaborate with communications and government relations colleagues to prepare relevant materials and presentations for outreach to the media, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
Contribute to and participate in tasks of the project and department as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and committees as needed.
A bachelor's degree in a research, policy, or health-related discipline required. Professional or advanced degree in public health or research-related field preferred.
Minimum of four years directly related professional experience in health care policy, research, or delivery.
Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
Knowledge of current policy and research on antibiotic use in human healthcare is helpful.
Excellent applied research and analytical skills, including a proven ability to comprehend scientific research, synthesize large amounts of scientific information, identify themes, and present the information to an informed general audience.
Ability to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as to identify, understand, and synthesize different policy perspectives.
Excellent oral communication skills, including an ease in conveying complex concepts and issues in a clear, effective manner for policy and general audiences.
Excellent written and editing skills, including a proven ability to learn and adopt new writing styles as required.
Demonstrated project- and time-management skills, including the ability to think strategically, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, resolve problems creatively and logically, organize time efficiently, and remain attentive to details.

Travel This position is expected to include occasional overnight travel for meetings and conferences.
