The Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) invites applications for a Researcher 6 position to conduct research and evaluation projects. The primary purpose of the CAREI Researcher 6’s work is to improve the quality of education for all learners. To achieve that purpose, the Researcher 6 must conduct neutral and rigorous educational research and evaluation projects. The projects provide consultation and collaborative services that cover a broad range of education topics for non-profits, educational institutions, government, and faculty collaborations. This position will manage project design, project resources, project personnel effort, project timeline, and project deliverables for multiple research and evaluation projects for CAREI clients. Project contracts vary in form, and are either: 1) External Sales contracts with school districts, non-profit organizations, higher education institutions, or community organizations, 2) Internal Sales contracts with other University of Minnesota Departments or faculty, or 3) Sponsored projects with federal granting agencies. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of the research methodologies that are used in the field of evaluation.
Additionally, this role will be expected to assist with hiring and overseeing the work of consultants for projects. The candidate will be expected to conduct evaluation activities, including developing multiple data collection instruments, conducting data collection and analysis, and report writing. The candidate will be expected to interact with a variety of stakeholders to acquire and interpret student data. This position will report directly to the Associate Director for Innovation and Outreach.
The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise and experience in the field of research and evaluation, as well as experience in working in school districts and school settings. The ideal candidate must be highly organized and skilled in verbal and written communication, and has the ability to work independently and make decisions within a project. Finally, the successful applicant will have the ability to design and implement research and evaluation designs.
This is a 100 %, annually renewable, 12-month academic professional position. Annually renewable appointments are subject to successful performance and availability of funds. The start date for this position is open. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Conduct Research and Evaluation (60%)
Interpret complex data and advise clients on appropriate approaches/methodologies to use for conducting research and evaluation in order to best inform decision making
Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of data collected for research/evaluation projects
Prepare and interpret results for written and oral reports, publications and presentations of research and evaluation results
Serve as an expert resource to lab members and lead research/evaluation teams in the preparation of reports
Design Research and Data Collection Instruments (20%)
Design research and evaluation plans to meet the information needs of school districts, non-profit organizations, higher education institutions, and community organizations
Work with clients to develop research based proposals for grants and research/evaluation projects including logic models, methods designs, and literature reviews
Develop qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments including interview protocols, focus group protocols, surveys, rating scales, and observations to answer the research/evaluation questions specific to projects
Develop quantitative data analysis instruments to answer educationally relevant research/evaluation questions
Coordinate and Supervise Project Personnel (20%)
Act as project lead for multiple research and evaluation projects
Serve as point person for communication with clients on projects
Oversee and coordinate project staff and graduate students in the completion of projects
Ensure the implementation of research/and evaluation plans by following timelines and producing products and deliverables
Manage financial budgets and effort for all lab and research personnel assigned to projects
Ph.D. in an Education, Psychology, Leadership, Evaluation or related field, with 3 years of experience and a substantial research and publication record
Experience in leading and conducting multiple large and small scale projects and coordinating the analysis, evaluation and reporting on all phases of the project(s)
Experience in developing research and evaluation plans and addressing highly complex methodology challenges through the design of protocols, policies, procedures
Experience in researching advanced research and evaluation concepts and creating designs to address evaluation contexts and implementation challenges
Experience in conducting field-based research in local educational agencies (LEAs), and schools using mixed approaches including quantitative and qualitative methodologies to research and evaluate programs and policies
Experience conducting research and evaluation involving students, teachers, parents, and administration in school settings
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others
Experience in research, assessment and evaluation in an educational, higher education, or social service agency
Ability to provide recommendations based on data results to aide stakeholders in data-based decision making
Ability to build the capacity of internal and external stakeholders related to best practices in research design, data analysis and interpretation
Ability to work independently, as well as serve on a research team, to make decisions to keep processes moving forward
Background and experience in implementing and evaluating Multi-tiered Systems of Supports in school districts
