Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Senior Systems Administrator to join the Information Services Department. These are both regular, full-time, exempt position, and eligible for benefits.
This position will work as part of a team to design, implement, and support WHOI's Windows and Linux server computing infrastructure, with an emphasis on Windows server administration, Active Directory, and VMware ESXi.
In addition, this position will work closely with scientists and researchers who are leaders in their fields, advising and assisting them with their computing, storage, and backup needs. This position is required to provide high level customer service, with demonstrated ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical users.
Install, configure and monitor servers, both physical and virtual, with an advanced knowledge and understanding of Windows and Linux server configurations including networking. Must have experience with shell scripting (one or more of PowerShell, Bash, Perl, Python, etc.).
As part of the Systems Team, responsible for management of the Institution's VMware cluster, including the use of management tools such as vRealize Operations Manager.
As part of the Systems Team, responsible for the management of Active Directory, including management and auditing tools such as Varonis.
Deploy and manage backup services (Commvault) for end user data, storage appliances, and servers.
Manage common infrastructure applications, such as MS SQL/MySQL/PostgreSQL, DNS, DHCP, Apache/IIS, J2EE services, AD/OpenLDAP and certificate management.
Evaluate and recommend hardware, software, fault-tolerant and disaster recovery solutions.
Keep current on new technologies as they relate to server and storage administration.
Maintain current documentation on systems and procedures.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent combination of skills/experience.
10+ years of experience supporting a large, networked computing environment, including both Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems.
Experience with monitoring packages (e.g. Nagios), version control systems (e.g. SVN, GIT), and automation/configuration orchestration (e.g. PowerShell, Chef, Puppet, Ansible)
Should have experience in at least one interpreted language (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby).
Experience with cloud computing (IaaS) including AWS is a plus.
Experience with container technologies (e.g. Docker, Singularity) and associated orchestration tools (e.g. Swarm, Kubernetes) is a plus.
U.S. citizenship is required based on government contract requirements
May be required to obtain and maintain Security Clearance and/or the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift more than 50 lbs independently; carry more than 50 lbs. Visual abilities to include near and the ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions. Other physical tasks include mostly sedentary which includes repetitive motion; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, kneeling, bending, and climbing ladders/stools. Talking, working around others, with others, and being able to work alone. Physical duties are subject to change.
