The purpose of this position is to supervise and coordinate the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution and wastewater/stormwater collection systems, and to manage and provide oversight to the administration of related contracts. This position also performs a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area of responsibility.
This position will be the Operator in Direct Responsible Charge of the City of Tempe wastewater collection system and focus primarily on wastewater and stormwater collection operational responsibilities. This position will oversee the early, 3:00 a.m., operations crew and supervisor up to 10 employees.
Requires three years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, maintenance and/or repair of water and/or wastewater systems for a utility. One year of lead or supervisory responsibility is preferred.
Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.
Requires the equivalent to an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university or a degree related to the core functions of this position.
The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours).
Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. (do not change for CDL positions)
Possession of a Grade III Water Distribution Operator Certificate and Grade III Wastewater Collection System Operator Certificate issued by the State of Arizona.
Must obtain a Grade IV Water Distribution Operator Certificate and Grade IV Wastewater Collection System Operator Certificate issued by the State of Arizona within 12 months of hire or promotion date.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
Successful completion of initial probationary period is contingent upon passing an FBI background investigation. Based on position, referred applicants may be subject to additional testing which may include pre-employment polygraph, physical and drug screening.
This position is FLSA Non-Exempt – eligible for overtime compensation and/or compensatory time.
