Job Requisition Number: 25921. The LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development) Center, a department of the ASUC Student Union, is at the center of student life at UC Berkeley. This campus department is responsible for facilitating leadership development opportunities in addition to encouraging student involvement and engagement within the campus community. As a team of dedicated and committed student affairs professionals, the LEAD Center promotes a student-centered learning environment by advising and empowering students to pursue their co-curricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. The LEAD Center provides services and resources focused on furthering students’ leadership abilities as well as personal and professional development—hence positively impacting the holistic learning and development of all UC Berkeley students. More specifically, the LEAD Center provides advising and leadership development opportunities to student groups, including 1,000+ registered student organizations (RSOs), over 35 student publications, 60+recognized fraternities and sororities, student government, SUPERB (the campus programming board), the recruitment and retention centers, various student cooperative communities, and campus-wide student leadership development and training initiatives and programs.
THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA (ASUC) This position provides direct advising and support to the Associated Students of the University of California. The ASUC is the official representative body for students at the University of California, Berkeley. The ASUC, originally founded in 1887, is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In addition to controlling some funding and some space for student organizations, the ASUC advocates for students on a University, local, state, and national level. The ASUC student leadership is comprised of 5 executive offices, 20 senators, 5 appointed officials, 2 Council Chairs, and several Commission Chairs each with their own offices of volunteer student staff.
The LEAD Center Coordinator position, dedicated to the ASUC, is responsible for advising a diverse undergraduate student body and fostering leadership within undergraduate student government. The position serves in an advising, administrative, financial advising, and programmatic role to support the learning, development, and administrative needs of the student government. The position is part of the LEAD Center Student Government Advising and Leadership Development team that provides overall advising and support to student government and their programs.
More specifically, this position supports and advises ASUC Officials and respective volunteer student staff and interns. Moreover, the Coordinator supports the ASUC Officials in the creation of their advocacy agendas, the development of various campus programs and activities, and the coordination of student government-specific leadership development opportunities.
The Coordinator provides guidance around accessing campus resources and provides information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures, and regulations as it pertains to the ability of student government to function efficiently in the planning of various organizational activities and programs. Within this role, the Coordinator advocates for student needs to campus departments, administration, and community stakeholders. In addition, the Coordinator provides financial advising to student government leaders and their affiliated programs, interns and staff. Furthermore, the Coordinator assists campus partners by providing information and interpretation of complex student government policies, procedures and regulations as it pertains to the ability of students and other campus entities to use student government resources, programs, and services.
The Coordinator also serves as the direct supervisor to the ASUC Administrative Office, the student-run administrative office that coordinates and manages many of the operational functions of the ASUC. In this supervisory role, the Coordinator is expected to hire, train, and manage the staff of the ASUC Administrative Office and their daily operations.•Experience advising students and/or student governments within a collegiate setting. •Thorough knowledge and experience in advising and counseling techniques and student leadership/student development theory and practice. •Skills in developing learning outcomes and assessing student learning and development. •Knowledge of the needs of undergraduate student leaders and willing to work in partnership with student government leadership. •Ability to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns. •Respectful of diverse opinions and underrepresented student experiences. •Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively one-to-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts. •Exceptional organizational and verbal/written communication skills, including the ability to use diplomacy/discretion. •Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work both collaboratively and independently with students, staff, faculty, and the public. •Ability to interact at all levels with campus and community constituents and stakeholders with a high level of political acumen. •Demonstrate leadership experience by creating cross-campus partnerships and collaborations with other colleagues. •Ability to manage multiple assignments and projects successfully in a fast paced, politically charged environment. •Ability to create an environment of understanding and acceptance; and challenge organizational policies and practices that may be exclusionary. •Demonstrate resilience, courage, objectivity, trustworthiness, honesty, respect, inclusiveness, and fairness. •Skill in designing, implementing, and facilitating training, leadership, customer service, and personal development retreats, workshops, and programs for full-time staff, student staff, interns, and graduate students. •Ability to demonstrate creativity and flexibility in working on various projects with a variety of constituent groups. •Ability to analyze situations and develop innovative solutions to improve functional area in regards to efficiency and performance. •Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment. •Demonstrate budgetary and fiscal experience. •Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
