Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Research and Sponsored Programs for The SAS's Deans Office. The Director's primary role is to support research and sponsored programs across SAS under the direction of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. This position reports to the Vice Dean of Administration for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), with a functional dotted line reporting relationship to the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education. The Director of Research and Sponsored Programs is an advisor to the Vice Dean of Administration, a member of their leadership team, and a key resource to the Deans, Faculty and Administrators of the School. The Director of Research and Sponsored Program passionately and consistently pursues research opportunities for SAS by promoting proposal writing and actively engaging with principal investigators throughout the process of identification, development, and submission of proposals. The Director has an in-depth understanding of research and sponsored operations both at the Rutgers and sponsor levels, including understanding of sponsors' policies, applicable federal, state and other government regulations, and Rutgers' institutional requirements, among others.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Acts as the first point of contact for University and School policy implementation and compliance related to research and sponsored program activities.
Responsible for participating in the development of strategic research plans as well as tactical initiatives and programs in support of the School's research objectives.
Creates and fosters, in conjunction with the Vice Deans, an infrastructure that supports proposal development and submission and reduces administrative burdens on researchers while balancing institutional obligations to comply with federal, state, sponsor, and university regulations and policies.
Serves as a conduit for information sharing across all departments/centers, advocates for, and represents the School's interests.
Responsible for significant hands-on contributions to SAS research planning, developing and implementing the corresponding operational strategies, and strategic proposal creation and review.
Coordinates and consolidates, at the School level, of research and sponsored program annual reports, benchmarking, strategic plans that may include financial, staffing, and mission related activities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/ or experience.
A minimum of five (5) years of recent and progressively responsible leadership roles in research and sponsored programs and/or related fields.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including superior writing skills.
Strong analytical skills and must be highly organized.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to assess needs, conduct research and benchmarking.
Ability to identify and effectively incorporate stakeholders, and lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of a project.
Commitment to and previous success in providing high-quality, timely customer service.
Ability to effectively navigating a consensus based environment with a decentralized locus of authority.
Demonstrates the ability to implement programs and procedures to carry out policies crafted by other entities while advocating the School's interests.
Master's or Ph.D. degree preferred.
Experience working in a multi-campus higher education setting.
8 years of recent and progressively responsible leadership roles in research and sponsored programs and/or related fields.
Utilizes Excel, Access, Word, SciQuest, Oracle financial management and reporting systems, RAPSS, eCert, Expense Reimbursement system, and a variety of SAS online systems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The demands upon this position are vast, due to the size and nature of the departments, it various Centers, multidisciplinary activities and multi-campus facilities.
