Advertised Summary Job Description: This position reports directly to the Chief Billing Compliance Officer in the Office for Billing Compliance for Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The Assistant Compliance Officer is responsible for the direct oversight of billing compliance activities in 5 assigned clinical departments, and periodic billing compliance audits of selected clinical trials and research studies.
Tasks / Responsibilities: -Implement Columbia University Irving Medical Center compliance guidelines, regulations, policies and recommendations within the departments. -Direct the application of The University's compliance plan and the Compliance plans of the assigned departments. Update the departmental compliance plans annually. -Develop department specific compliance educational programs focused on the department's documentation, coding, and billing processes. -Randomize quality control transaction reviews to assure adherence to documentation standards. -Routine audits for 5 departments twice yearly. Provide feedback and retraining to providers and departmental leadership. Attend provider meetings for results and corrective actions. Handle government audits and requests for refunds and documentation for the assigned departments. -Utilize MDAudit software to schedule audits and perform audits within the software. -Assist in MDAudit maintenance and operations. -Prepare and disseminate compliance information to appropriate staff and faculty. -Develop monthly analytic reports based on the compliance activities within the department. -Work with departmental personnel on code research, questions, refunds etc. -Provide general oversight of all billing activities, as they relate to compliance, within the departments. -Develop methodology, implement, and monitor research related billing activities within the departments. -Attend monthly new hire training for new hires, provide training material and take attendance. -Assist with other assignments in the office and related responsibilities as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree or related field or equivalent, plus four years of related experience in a large, complex organization.
Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) will be required within two years of hire.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, supervisory, administrative, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Excellent knowledge of physician billing and documentation requirements. Knowledge of computer programs including excel. Ability to work well with physicians, and a working knowledge of the Medical Center's billing system. Electronic auditing software is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications: A minimum of five years of direct experience is preferred. An advanced degree is desirable.
