The Research Associate, based at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness, will work directly with Professor Michael Porter as his principal research associate in the area of competitiveness and economic development at the national, state, regional, and city levels. Responsibilities include the preparation of Harvard Business School case studies on topics related to competitiveness, working with Professor Porter to prepare presentations for academic and public policy audiences, preparing original research support and literature reviews, analyzing, expanding, and maintaining databases of economic and other data, and representing Professor Porter in forums and with groups in the competitiveness field.
The Research Associate may also serve as the liaison to the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, a non-profit founded by Michael Porter in 1994 to promote economic revitalization in America's distressed inner city communities.
In addition, based on the candidate and Professor Porter's needs, the Research Associate may devote a significant portion of time on work in the area of competitive strategy. This will involve research on companies and industries, preparing company case studies, and conducting related statistical research.
Please Note: This is a full-time term appointment starting in January, 2019 through June 30, 2019, with strong potential for reappointment. The ideal candidate should be willing to commit to work at the Institute for two or more years in order to attain a mastery of the subject.

About the Institute: The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness (www.isc.hbs.edu) is a joint Institute of Harvard University and Harvard Business School, dedicated to supporting and extending the research pioneered by Professor Porter and disseminating it to scholars and practitioners on a global basis. The Institute is focused on the study of competition and its implications for the strategy of companies and other types of organizations, the competitiveness of nations, regions and cities, and new ways to address social challenges such as health care, environmental impact, corporate social responsibility, and philanthropy. MS/MA in Economics or related field required or bachelor's degree with significant relevant work experience. Evidence of academic excellence. Proven evidence of independent research in specific advanced field of study. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected.
An advanced degree in Economics, Development, or MBA along with consulting experience is preferred. Academic training in economics is a necessity, and training and background in management is desirable.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong conceptual ability; high quality of mind; excellent writing skills; the ability to work productively under time pressure; the capacity to work well independently; and the ability to interact successfully with senior leaders. The position will involve working with various statistical software packages, collecting and assembling data from disparate sources, and creating databases. Advanced knowledge of PowerPoint, Excel, and Access is preferred.
Other desirable qualities: proven experience in academic research, strong computing skills (especially PowerPoint), and working knowledge of econometrics. Interest in further graduate study after working at the Institute is considered a plus for applicants without an advanced degree.
This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative. Evidence of prior high-quality, original academic writing, and background in analysis and interpretation of relevant data, research, news, and literature. Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis, as well as produce a creative interpretation, is a must. Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential. All positions will be given a writing exam.
