The Global Studies Department is part of the School of Social, Behavioral, and Global Studies an interdisciplinary academic unit, including Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography, History, Global and Comparative Politics, Global Political Economy, Native American Studies, Sociology, Labor Studies, and Religious Studies. In Global Studies, we seek a tenure track Assistant Professor of International Development/ Humanitarian Issues who shares our commitment to transdisciplinary methods in their teaching, research, professional application, and service. Our central focus is serving various transcultural student communities at CSUMB.
The International Development/Humanitarian Issues faculty will focus on analysis, knowledge, and skills for students broadly based in international development/humanitarian issues through existing GS service learning courses as well as the development of new global service learning opportunities. Priority will be given to applicants with field experience as a development or humanitarian practitioner, familiarity with service learning and other forms of community based experiential learning and/or experience supervising interns. A strong candidate will have a firm grounding in theories and trends in the field of Global Studies. We particularly seek someone with theory in global social change. While area focus is open, expertise in Latin America, MENA (Middle East and North Africa region or the Greater Middle East), and Sub-Saharan Africa would complement expertise areas of current faculty.
Teach lower and upper division courses in service learning, development and humanitarian issues
Develop curriculum in areas of specialization within the framework of the GS Program Improvement Plan and campus-wide curricular changes
Mentor students, including those from non-traditional, first generation, working class, and ethnically diverse backgrounds
Teach a typical load of 12 credits per semester
Develop an area focus related to International Development/ Humanitarian Issues
Support the development of global service learning opportunities for GS and other CSUMB students
Doctorate in a social science related to international development/ humanitarian issues by the time of appointment from an APA accredited doctoral program
Ability to teach effectively in areas of international development/ humanitarian issues
Experience with and commitment to inclusive/critical, experiential and assets-based pedagogies
Work closely with a small GS faculty to advise students on classes, internships, and study-abroad
Experience with working effectively in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community
Demonstrate a track record of and/or strong potential for scholarly publication and/or funded research
