TAE Technologies, Inc, formerly known as Tri Alpha Energy, has a national lab sized research program in high beta magnetically confined fusion plasmas, based around the advanced, beam driven, Field Reversed Configuration.It has built and is operating the new C-2W experiment, aka Norman, which is one of the largest fusion plasma experiments in the United States.The goals of C-2W are to push high beta fusion plasmas into new parameter regimes and to guide the design of future fusion power plants. With its vast diagnostic suite, C-2W is an ideal and fertile testing ground for new plasma theory and simulation.
The successful candidate will join the Computational Modeling group at TAE, where they will have a creative role in developing and applying novel transport and stability models for high beta plasmas.They will collaborate with leading theoretical, computational, and experimental plasma physicists to test the models against the C-2W experiment, and they will have the opportunity to use their theoretical work to propose and lead new physics experiments. They will also participate in the conceptual physics design of future next-step high beta fusion plasma devices. They may bring as inspiration their ideas from space plasma, astrophysics, open systems, and fusion plasma research. Present areas of interest in theory and modeling include but are not limited to (i) kinetic modeling of electron dynamics, (ii) multi-ion species global transport, (iii) RF heating, (iv) non-inductive current drive, (v) kinetic microturbulent transport, and (vi) self-organization phenomena.
To contribute to these efforts the successful candidate must have a strong background in theoretical plasma physics and/or computational plasma physics with experience of high performance computing.Existing computational models at TAE use Monte Carlo, Particle-in-Cell, fluid, hybrid fluid-particle, and continuum methods, and are accelerated using MPI, OpenMP, and GPGPU methods. TAE Technologies has its own in house cluster and has allocations at US Department of Energy Leadership Computing Facilities, via an INCITE award and Director’s Discretion awards at ALCF and NERSC.

Required Education:M.S. in Computational or Theoretical Plasma physics or related field.
The ideal candidate will have experience in many or all of these areas:
·Theoretical background in high beta plasma physics and/or open systems
·MHD, Particle-In-Cell, or Vlasov Fokker-Planck modeling in magnetically confined plasmas.
·High performance computing experience including MPI, OpenMP, or GPGPU computing
Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation are necessary. The ability to work in a dynamic, team environment is required.
Software Knowledge and Skills:
·FORTRAN or C++
·Python, IDL, or Matlab.
·Demonstrated ability to work independently on long term research projects.
·Ability to organize and schedule work to meet deadlines.
·Ability to work as lead on one project and to participate in and support other projects.
Other Preferred Experience:
·Original work published in professional scientific journals.
·Experience presenting at national and/or international level
Preferred Education: Ph.D. in Computational or Theoretical Plasma physics or related field.
