The New Jersey State Library (NJSL) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, service-oriented librarian proficient in research (legal research is desirable) with strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills to join the State Library Information Center’s Law Library. Under direction, the successful candidate will provide high quality legal reference and research service for state government employees and assist all constituencies served by the New Jersey State Library. Responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to, participating in the compilation and digitization of New Jersey legislative histories; adding and updating content to the Law Library’s web pages; developing research guides; providing technology assistance; creating and presenting webinars, tutorials and classes on legal resources and services; conducting library tours; promoting library services and collections; working on digitization projects; and special projects as assigned.

Provides accurate, timely and courteous reference service to all constituencies served by the New Jersey State Library.
Guides library customers in the navigation of legal databases and the library’s website.
Maintains standards for excellent customer service.
Does the work involved in reviewing, selecting, purchasing, classifying and maintaining print and electronic resources in subject specific areas or collections with a focus on the needs of the primary communities served by the New Jersey State Library Information Center.
Develops and conducts training for library customers and staff in the use of law-related library resources.
Writes about and describes library materials, services and training for the website and other information outlets.
Creates and maintains research guides.
Utilizes and may administer various types of software and electronic information systems in use throughout the Library.
Operates library computers and equipment and can assist others with their use.
Resolves library customer concerns.
Participates on library committees and teams.
Participates in meetings and gives talks before professional and public groups.
Develops and conducts programs geared to stimulate library use, promote electronic subject specialty resources, and inform the community of library services.
Prepares accurate and informative statistical, subject, and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Maintains library records and files.

Ability to conduct effective reference interviews and suggest legal resources without giving legal advice.
Ability to direct patrons in the use of specialized legal materials in print format.
Knowledge of electronic resources and the ability to search them successfully.
Knowledge of library techniques and tools used to gather data and information; the ability to recognize resources by bibliographic methods; to locate information in specific sources; to assemble ideas from scattered sources; and to deliver requested information to state departments, state government officers, other libraries and the general public in a timely and courteous manner.

LICENSE: Possession of, or eligibility for, a N.J. Professional Librarian Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The ability to push or pull book carts weighing 40 pounds, retrieve and return library materials to shelves, and hold and carry library materials.

Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, who transfer from within the College/New Jersey State Library, or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside of the State of New Jersey, are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
