The Deputy Director is responsible for operational, administrative, and financial management of the Brown Policy Lab (BPL) and supports the Executive Director in developing and executing a strategic plan in line with the goals of the BPL and the University including on the state and national levels. Provides leadership for the Center, including supporting the Executive Director in developing a strategic plan for the organization that will enable it to fulfill its mission and increase its impact on the state of Rhode Island and nationally. Manages and cultivates existing relationships with funders and identifies and develops funding opportunities from additional sources.
Strategic Leadership & Management
Provides leadership for the Center, including supporting the Executive Director in developing a strategic plan for the organization that will enable it to fulfill its mission and increase its impact on the state of Rhode Island and nationally.
Builds and maintains long-lasting, meaningful, and trusted partnerships with government.
Collaborates with the Rhode Island Governorâ™s office to develop and execute the project agenda.
Develops successful partnerships and collaborations with Brown University faculty, students, and senior administration.
Builds and maintains relationships with non-profits, philanthropy, and the private sector.
In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and execute short- and long-term organizational development strategies including staffing, budgets, and operations.
Initiate and set goals for projects according to the strategic objectives of the BPL.
Execute discrete projects from start to completion involving deadlines, milestones, and processes.
Apply change, risk, and resource management principles when needed.
Devise evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine the need for improvements.
Outreach/ Communications/ Fundraising
Provides leadership on strategic communications plans that include translating and disseminating results of research to policymakers and the public, communicating scientific research methods to key stakeholders, and developing written press releases about Center results and activities.
Manages and cultivates existing relationships with funders and identifies and develops funding opportunities from additional sources.
Supports the Executive Director as a spokesperson for the Center to build awareness about the organizationâ™s activities, develop important partnerships, and build community and develop a vibrant ecosystem of innovators
Ensure program operations and activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies.
Write articles, op-eds, and other media about the BPL and related activities.
Operations / Fiscal & Risk Management
Promotes a positive and efficient work environment that fosters a passion for the mission, creativity, and teamwork and respect for all members of the organization.
Supports the Executive Director in ensuring Center meets all deadlines, partnership commitments, and grant reporting requirements, with an obligation to preserve the BPLâ™s reputation for always meeting commitments on time and on budget.
Works with the BPLâ™s management team and Advisory Board to implement an organizational infrastructure that will support anticipated growth and ensures that programmatic objectives are supported internally.
Identifies top talent, mentors and supervises team members, oversees the execution of field projects, and prioritizes, delegates, and manages effectively.
Supports inclusive annual strategic planning process and ensures planning decisions are used in setting annual project and organizational goals.
Identifies and evaluates the risks to the organization, staff, partners, finances, goodwill, and implements measures to control risks.
Seek continuous improvement through enhanced efficiency and productivity of procedures and people.
Keep up-to-date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance.
Bachelorâ™s degree with minimum of 12 years of progressive experience as a program director or managerial position or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Masterâ™s degree preferred.
Demonstrated experience working with various constituencies in government and academic settings.
Outstanding leadership, coaching, policy, and relationship management experience.
Strong and proven track record to using rigorous scientific research and data to improve policy impact.
Excellence in organizational management with an ability to develop and execute a strategic vision, achieve organizational objectives, and coach, manage and develop high-performing teams
Deep understanding of government and the policy-making process.
Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to understand needs of various partners and stakeholder groups and to communicate persuasively and passionately in order to advance common objectives; ability to understand and convey complex subjects to diverse audiences.
Expert at navigating policy, political, and communications challenges, and working across all levels of government to improve outcomes.
