As part of the Executive Leadership Team of the museum, the Sr. Manager of Development plays a vital role in the development and implementation of the team's strategic fundraising goals. Often described as a hidden gem in Kansas City, T/m is striving to reach new audiences to share the world's largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and the largest collection of antique toys on public display in the Midwest. Reopening in 2015 after a successful $10M capital campaign and a stellar renovation, the museum is poised for a new and exciting phase of development. T/m's mission is to educate, inspire, and delight adults and children through the museum's collection and preservation of toys and miniatures. The museum serves over 30,000 visitors annually, operates in a 33,000 square feet museum and cares for over 78,000 objects.
The Sr. Manager of Development, in partnership with the Executive Director, will identify, cultivate, solicit, steward and increase investment relationships with individual donors, foundations and businesses throughout the Kansas City region and nationally. The Sr. Manager of Development will be responsible for developing relationships with individual donors, managing donor database, writing fundraising appeals, communicating with and steward donors and coordinating logistics for special events. The Sr. Manager of Development will also manage the grants submission process, develop and manage reports and provide leadership and support in external relations of the museum to deepen community and donor relationships.
The position reports directly to the Executive Director and offers an exceptional opportunity to work in a creative and fast paced environment, focusing on a design and implementation of a comprehensive annual fundraising program. Success in the position will be defined by the envisioning and implementation of a comprehensive strategy to research, identify and solicit sources of individual, institutional and corporate support through the development of giving circles, partnerships, and highly competitive proposals.
As a member of the senior leadership team, contribute to the strategic planning, policymaking, and organizational management of the museum.
Direct the museum's donor education and fundraising activities to maximize fundraising opportunities.
Develop and maintain development department budget, including analysis, reporting and forecasting.
Supervise Marketing & Communications Manager for consistent use of brand, its enhancement and evolution; oversee the website, social media, and program listings.
Attend community and chamber events as a representative of the museum, encouraging the development of partnerships and collaborations.
Spearhead annual development efforts, oversee and implement direct mail campaign to current and lapsed donors; identify, cultivate, solicit and steward to increase investment relationships with individual donors, foundations and businesses nationally and throughout the Kansas City region.
Manage, evaluate and expand financial support for current donors while refining donor giving information through Giftworks CRM system.
Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors.
Envision, design and coordinate organization of special events and fundraising activities.
Corporate and Foundation Engagement
Design and implement comprehensive strategy for new corporate giving initiatives.
Oversee the development of sponsorship benefits, recruitment of supporters, and delivery of benefits.
Serve as a primary grant developer and research new grant opportunities; track, prepare, submit proposals and reports; oversee the development grants calendar.
Monitor the organizational grants calendar to identify workflow and handling of grants.
Manage outside contracted grant writing services when necessary.
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Prefer 5+ years in fundraising; Masters of CFRE is highly desirable.
Demonstrated success in fundraising (membership, capital campaign, sponsorships, etc.), preferably in a cultural setting.
A proven leader with excellent communication skills, demonstrated management ability, and understanding of strategic and operational planning.
Excellent financial management skills, including experience with developing and managing budgets.
Experience with project management, including conceptualizing projects and evaluating funding opportunities.
Demonstrated technical proficiency with CRM database MS Office Suite, Creative Cloud Applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), and email communications software (MailChimp, Constant Contact) and all the major social media platforms.
Passion for T/m and the importance of art, history and museums as educational institutions.
A creative thinker who is able to generate new ideas and problem-solve proactively.
Ability to adjust leadership and communication style to meet needs of variable constituencies, both internal and external.
High level of demonstrated personal accountability.
