Essential Job Duties:
The agent will be expected to develop specific educational programs and to collaborate with other agencies, groups, and organizations in order to more effectively reach intended audiences throughout the county.
The agent in this position will be responsible for educational programming and informational assistance related to consumer horticulture, commercial ornamentals and landscaping, turf management and forestry. Additional responsibilities include recruiting and training Master Gardeners and coordinating an active local Master Gardener Association, Local Foods Coordinator, Wildlife and Pond Management and developing and coordinating youth horticultural programs. The agent will also work with local farmers markets and CSAs and other small scale farmers including vegetable and commercial nut production.
This is an agent position which covers Bladen County. Travel is required. The agent in this position will be responsible for educational programming and informational assistance related to consumer horticulture, commercial ornamentals and landscaping, turf/turf management, forestry, wildlife, pond management, Master Gardener Program, and local foods to include farmers markets and CSAs.
This position demands an individual with an understanding of horticulture programming needs. The successful candidate must plan, develop, implement, and evaluate programs related to consumer horticulture, commercial ornamentals and landscaping, turf/turf management, forestry, wildlife, pond management, Master Gardener Program, and local foods to include farmers markets and CSAs and others areas as identified by advisory members and other stakeholders. Candidate must be able to recruit, train, and incorporate volunteers into programming efforts. Collaboration with other government agencies, public and private non-profits and corporations is expected. This person must enjoy working with individuals as well as groups, be able to work with diverse audiences, and have the ability to manage multiple tasks with little supervision. The successful candidate is expected to be a team player working with the Extension staff and other organizations and have the ability to work independently.
The pursuit of outside resources such as grants and donations will be necessary to support program expansion.
Experience preparing and presenting educational resource materials for face to face settings or via other forms of writing, and internet, including social media, is important.
One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
A bachelor's degree in horticulture or related area of science is required.
Knowledge and experience in communications, presentations, public relations/marketing, leadership, time management, organization, technology, networking, and resource development is essential.
A related Master's degree is preferred.
Required license or certification:
Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation required and must be maintained. In order to operate a state vehicle, a valid driver's license is required and must be maintained.
