The 3200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch (SPR) is regarded as a living and learning laboratory for Cal Poly (CP) located 180 miles north of campus near Davenport. The Ranch is owned by Cal Poly Corporation (CPC) and managed by the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES). Four permanent staff are assigned to the Ranch that include the Director, Operations Manager, Livestock Manager, and Administrative and Communication Coordinator.
All SPR employees work collectively to operate the Ranch and to help integrate educational opportunities in the form of apprenticeships, internships, student projects, short courses, field trips, and community engagement. The position requires on-site residence in housing provided by Cal Poly Corporation.
This is a collaborative position between Swanton Pacific Ranch and the Animal Science Department with a direct reporting line to the Swanton Pacific Ranch Director while receiving general livestock management direction from the Animal Science Beef Operations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
BS degree in animal science or closely related degree with animal science emphasis
At least four years of demonstrated experience in livestock and ranch management
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
First aid and CPR certificate
Valid CA driver's license is required
Class A driver's license or ability to obtain one within the first six months
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems, and demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word- processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of grazing management and livestock health maintenance and care.
Demonstrated expertise in livestock grazing management infrastructure with the ability to develop complete and thorough management documents.
Demonstrated expertise in livestock watering systems.
Demonstrated expertise in livestock animal handling and health care
Demonstrated expertise in horsemanship and ability to work livestock horseback.
Ability to understand and interact with researchers, analyze facts, draw conclusions and devise practical solutions to complex problems.
Ability to maintain detailed and consistent record and inventory system on livestock, grassland, pastures and livestock operations including; roads, fences, gates, water systems, stream crossings, equipment, and other pertinent infrastructure.
Working knowledge of effective management principles and possesses the ability to apply the principles and practices of effective supervision.
Maintain high quality/standards of work, leadership, initiative, problem solving, commitment, creativity, professional responsibility and judgment.
Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with administrators, managers, the campus community and the public. Skill in developing a rapport with individuals and organizations.
Ability to operate two and four-wheel drive vehicles on and off-road, ATV, rubber-tired tractors, various tractor mounted implements, backhoe, dozer, chainsaw, equipment and livestock trailers, livestock handling facilities, squeeze chute, and scales.
Ability to operate firearms for animal termination and depredation as directed.
Ability to work under adverse conditions including outdoor work in all-weather on steep terrain in the presence of ticks and exposure to poison oak.
Ability to move/lift equipment and supplies up to 90 lbs.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Experience with alternative grazing management programs and ability to use GIS.
Experience in: livestock research/demonstration projects, heavy equipment operation, off-highway vehicle, small engine operation, and maintenance is desired.
Certification as a California Certified Rangeland Manager (CRM) and/or Certified Professional in Range Management (CPRM) is desired depending on expertise.
BQA certification desired.
Familiarity with electronic herd record keeping systems, such as CattleMax desired.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
Must be able to work, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must work weekends as necessary for livestock operations, field trips and special events.
Position requires incumbent to live on the Ranch property.
This position is a 'designated position' in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
This position classification has been defined as 'Exempt' and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
