Assistant Professor Position in Coupled Human-Natural Systems Modeling

As part of an interdisciplinary cluster hire in coastal water sustainability, the University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Coupled Human-Natural Systems Modeling beginning in fall 2019 at the rank of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates at other levels will be considered.
Cluster Hire in Coastal Water Sustainability: The cluster hire will focus on water quality, hydrological processes, human behavior, remediation, and impacts on human and ecosystem health arising from increased stressors on coastal water resources. The cluster will complement existing strengths in water science, engineering, economics, and policy, and will establish critical new capabilities at UD in research and teaching, with six faculty hires: two each in environmental toxicology & epidemiology, water & soil remediation, and systems modeling. An interdisciplinary team of faculty from five UD colleges (CANR, CAS, CEOE, CHS and COE) developed the vision for this cluster, taking a systemic and solutions-oriented approach to global water challenges in coastal environments, and providing several possibilities for primary and joint appointments dependent on new hire expertise. Faculty hired as part of the cluster will be part of a high potential interdisciplinary team, as well as important additions and complements to existing UD faculty and programs.
This Position: At this time, we are seeking exceptional candidates with expertise in human-natural systems modeling with an emphasis on agent-based modeling. Candidates should have experience integrating data on human behavior collected through social sciences techniques (e.g., experimental economics) and applying this behavior to models of natural systems at multiple scales given various policies and environmental conditions. A Ph.D. in economics, applied economics, computer science, geography, applied mathematics/statistics, or a related field is required. Successful candidates are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and have a dedicated interest in high quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We seek an interdisciplinary researcher who is attentive to both high-impact applications and cutting-edge technology and are committed to establishing robust, extramurally funded research programs. As a part of the cluster hire, the successful candidate will have opportunities to work on recently funded research related to water security. The position would make connections to UD’s current strengths in behavioral and environmental economics, environmental policy, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. The hire will enhance new and existing degree programs in Applied Economics and Statistics, Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, and/or Geography. The successful candidate will have a primary appointment in an appropriate department, that may include but is not limited to the Department of Applied Economics & Statistics in the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources, the Department of Computer and Information Sciences in the College of Engineering, the School of Marine Science & Policy or the Department of Geography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and the Environment.To foster collaborations across academic units, we expect that most faculty hired through this search will have interdepartmental joint appointments.

University of Delaware salaries and fringe benefit packages compare favorably with other universities in general and land grant universities in particular. Tenure-track professors receive a one-semester sabbatical leave in the third year. A competitive start-up package will be available.
