The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is an individual membership professional organization representing more than 100,000 member physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students of physical therapy. The Private Practice Section (PPS) is a specialty section of APTA dedicated to championing the success of physical therapists in the private practice setting. The 4,200 members of the section have an entrepreneurial spirit, and many own and operate their own clinics. Their businesses are both large and small, some with single locations, some with many locations across multiple states and regions.
PPS seeks a Payment Specialist who will be responsible for leading the Section’s initiatives to promote an advantageous payment environment for our members. The ideal candidate:
Can provide payment and compliance perspective to strategy related to advancing payment policy for physical therapist services.
Has experience working with government and commercial insurers to negotiate payment for provider services.
Is proactive and continually assesses the complex payment environment for new opportunities and risks.
Can articulate the physical therapist value proposition for alternative payment models.
Can interpret membership needs to create tools and resources to help members navigate the payment environment.
Has experience working with volunteer committees or subject matter experts to develop resources and educational programming.
Critical Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor, analyze, and communicate with members about payment and market trends that affect the physical therapy profession.
Develop and maintain relationships—both internally with appropriate association staff and members, and externally with insurers, payers, policy makers and other professional organizations—to target and engage in opportunities to maximize payment, improve access, demonstrate the value of, and reduce administrative burden for physical therapist services.
Collaborate with members and identify subject matter experts to develop, coordinate, and maintain payment resources for members.
Identify, develop, maintain, and leverage strategic relationship with relevant staff of external organizations, including coalitions, in accordance with relevant PPS policies and priorities.
Coordinate with PPS lobbyist to draft and provide strategic advice and counsel on PPS comment letters and other external communications.
Respond to member inquiries regarding payment and contracting issues.
Act as Staff Liaison to Payment Policy Committee, Committee- or Board-directed Task Forces, staff work groups, member groups, and volunteer leaders on initiatives and tasks in alignment with the Section’s strategic priorities. In coordination with committee Chairs, schedule meetings, develop agendas, complete minutes, and provide facilitation, direction, and clarification during meetings if needed.
Establish short- and long-term Committee goals that support the PPS Strategic Plan and include timelines for the development and implementation of strategic programs, projects, and activities. Act as project manager for Committee activities.
Collaborate with Education and Communications Staff in strategic communications, messaging and grassroots materials that are designed to advance PPS policy priorities. Identify ways to promote tools and resources through all available channels, such as live educational programming, webinars, on the Section’s website, in the Section’s magazine, and through other communication vehicles such as podcasts and social media.
Activate and track engagement metrics to understand how members access and evaluate payment resources and develop or amend future deliverables accordingly.
Other duties as required by business needs.
Bachelor’s Degree plus 6-8 years of related work experience with payment policy, public policy, third-party payment and regulatory issues, and/or billing and coding issues. Association experience a plus.
Familiarity with private and public third-party payment and coverage policies and healthcare payment procedures, including for commercial and government insurance programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE.
Ability to professionally represent PPS, PPS members, and consumers to internal and external audiences.
Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and verbal) are mandatory.
Is organized, pays attention to details, and provides good follow-up.
Experience working with volunteers and subject matter experts.
Excellent customer service skills, service-oriented, and relates will to people at all levels of membership and staff. Should be a team player with consensus-building skills.
Ability to work independently and in team environment.
Ability to travel 3-5 times per year for conferences and other association business.
